    Abstract:

    One hundred-thirty six Mediterranean geckos, Hemidactylus turcicus , were collected between December 1986 and March 2016 in Hardin ( n = 7), Harris ( n = 57), and Tom Green ( n = 72) counties, Texas, USA., and examined for helminth parasites. Fifty-two H. turcicus (38%) were infected with at least one helminth species. Found were a trematode, Mesocoelium meggitti , three cestodes, Mesocestoides sp. (tetrathyridia), Oochoristica ameivae and Oochoristica scelopori , and four nematodes, Cosmocercoides variabilis , Oswaldocruzia pipiens , Parapharyngodon cubensis , and larvae of Physaloptera sp. Oochoristica ameivae , O. scelopori , P. cubensis , Physaloptera sp., and Os. pipiens represent new host records for H. turcicus and M. meggitti is reported from Texas for the first time. A summary of the helminth parasites of both native and non-native H. turcicus is presented.

    Four species of Gonatodes, Gonatodes albogularis, Gonatodes antillensis, Gonatodes concinnatus, and Gonatodes humeralis, were examined for helminths. Found were 8 species of Nematoda: gravid specimens of Cosmocerca parva, Parapharyngodon scleratus, Physaloptera retusa, Skrjabinelazia galliardi, Spauligodon bonairensis, and Spauligodon oxkutzcabiensis and larvae of Physaloptera sp. and Acuariidae gen. sp. It appears that species of Gonatodes are parasitized by generalist helminths. A list for currently known helminths infecting species of Gonatodes and 4 new host records are provided.

    Plica plica and Plica umbra from Brazil and Ecuador were examined for endoparasites. Plicaplica harboured one species of Digenea, Mesocoelium monas, four species of Nematoda, Oswaldocruzia vitti, Physalopteroides venancioi, Strongyluris oscari and Physaloptera retusa; P. umbra harboured five species of Nematoda, Oswaldocruzia bainae, Oswaldocruzia vitti, Physaloptera retusa, Strongyluris oscari and Piratuba digiticauda. Three new host records are reported for P. plica and three for P. umbra. Both lizard species are ant specialists but do eat other types of prey. We speculate on sources of endoparasites based on the diets of these two arboreal tropical lizards.

    Abstract Three species of vespertilionid bats, including 4 big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus), 4 western small-footed myotis (Myotis ciliolabrum), and 6 little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus) were collected between July and October 2007 from 2 sites on the Pine Ridge escarpment in Dawes County, Nebraska, U.S.A., and examined for helminths. Ten of 14 (71%) were infected with 1 or more parasites as follows: 3 of 4 (75%) E. fuscus, 3 of 6 (50%) M. lucifugus, and 3 of 4 (75%) M. ciliolabrum harbored the lecithodendrid trematode Paralecithodendrium swansoni; 1 of 4 (25%) E. fuscus, 1 of 6 (17%) M. lucifugus, and 1 of 4 (25%) M. ciliolabrum were infected with a plagiorchid trematode, Plagiorchis vespertilionis; and a single E. fuscus (25%) harbored third-stage larval spirurid nematode Physaloptera sp. This is the first time P. vespertilionis and P. swansoni have been reported from M. ciliolabrum. In addition, E. fuscus is a new host for Physaloptera sp., and P. swansoni is now documented in Nebraska.

    Abstract Seasonal prevalence and abundance of helminth species in an introduced population (Oahu, Hawaii) of the brown anole Anolis sagrei were examined. One species of Cestoda Oochoristica sp., four species of Nematoda Atractis scelopori, Physaloptera squamatae, Physocephalus sp. (larvae) and larval Acuariidae, one species of Acanthocephala Acanthocephalus bufonis and one species of Pentastomida Raillietiella frenatus were found. Seasonal prevalence of Atractis scelopori is correlated with the seasonal reproductive cycle of Anolis sagrei with highest prevalence found during periods of maximum reproductive activity.

    Physaloptera galvaoi n.sp. fue registrada parasitando en el estomago de Cerradomys subflavus (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae) capturados en el Parque Nacional Serra da Canastra (Sao Roque de Minas, Minas Gerais, Brasil). El genero Physaloptera tiene 13 especies que parasitan los roedores en todo el mundo. Entre ellos, cinco fueron registrados en las Americas. Las principales caracteristicas de la nueva especie son el tamano, la forma de la espicula y la relacion de longitud de la espicula con la longitud total del cuerpo, las papilas pre y pos cloacal equidistantes en los especimen masculinos, y el utero con cuatro hasta cinco ramas en las hembras. La nueva especie difiere de las otras especies del genero Physaloptera registradas en America como Physaloptera bispiculata, Physaloptera murisbrasiliensis, Physaloptera calnuensis, Physaloptera longispicula y Physaloptera hispida por tener: (1) una espicula pequena, (2) primero y segundo par de papilas asimetricamente desplazadas (la izquierda anterior a la derecha), (3) utero de cuatro hasta cinco ramas (tetra y pentadelphy). Estos caracteres morfologicos representan a P. galvaoi como una nueva especie para el genero. Por lo tanto, los especimens de nematodos parasitos de estomago del hospededor C. subflavus representan una nueva especie de la familia Physalopteridae llamado P. galvaoi n.sp.

    Abstract:

    Nematodes of the genus Physaloptera are globally distributed and more than 100 species are known. Their life cycle involves insects, including beetles, cockroaches and crickets, as intermediate hosts. This study describes a new species of Physaloptera and reports molecular phylogenetic analyses to determine its relationships within the family Physalopteridae. Physaloptera amazonica n. sp. is described from the stomach of the caviomorph rodent Proechimys gardneri collected in the Amazon rainforest in the state of Acre, Brazil. The species is characterized by the male having the first and second pair of sessile papillae asymmetrically placed, lacking a median papilla-like protuberance between the third pairs of sessile papillae, differentiated by size and shape of the spicules, while females have four uterine branches. For both nuclear 18S rRNA and MT-CO1 gene-based phylogenies, we recovered Turgida sequences forming a clade nested within Physaloptera, thus making Physaloptera paraphyletic to the exclusion of Turgida, suggesting that the latter may have evolved from the former monodelphic ancestral state to a derived polydelphic state, or that some species of Physaloptera may belong to different genera. Relationships between most taxa within Physaloptera were poorly resolved in our phylogenies, producing multifurcations or a star phylogeny. The star-like pattern may be attributed to evolutionary processes where past simultaneous species diversification events took place. Physaloptera amazonica n. sp. formed an independent lineage, separately from the other species of Physaloptera, thus supporting the status of a new species. However, all molecular data suggested a closer relationship with other Neotropical species. In conclusion, we added a new species to this already largely diverse genus Physaloptera, bringing new insights to its phylogenetic relationships. Further analyses, adding more species and markers, should provide a better understanding of the evolutionary history of physalopterids.

    Gastrointestinal nematodes are important ecological assets for the maintenance of the biodiversity in the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. They parasitize a number of animals of the local fauna, in which some species can promote serious injuries in the stomach wall of their hosts, which may lead to death. Among these nematodes, parasites of the genus Physaloptera are known to parasitize mammals (particularly carnivores and small rodents), birds and reptiles, being important for the local biodiversity. In this work, three hundred and sixty-two nematodes were recovered from the stomach of twenty-one Metachirus nudicaudatus (Didelphimorphia: Didelphidae) collected in Duas Bocas Biological Reserve, State of Espirito Santo, one of the largest Atlantic Forest remnants and important wildlife refuge of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. Analysis using fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy as well as phylogenetic assessment using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene showed that the parasites belong to the Physaloptera. Our results show details of the nematode morphology including the cloacal papillae distribution, cuticular topography details, 2D and 3D measurements of the structures with taxonomic importance. Molecular data confirmed the validity of P. mirandai and the phylogeny supported the monophyly of the assemblage formed by Physaloptera and Turgida. The use of a combination of quantitative and multidimensional microscopy tools, such as 3D reconstruction and modeling, allied to phylogenetic analysis may provide grounds for a new approach on helminth taxonomy and structural characterization.

    Gastrointestinal nematodes were recovered from thirty four Gracilinanus agilis from forty four collected in Pantanal, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Two hundred seventy four spirurids were recovered from the esophagus, stomach and intestines, comprising three species from three different genera. These were identified as Pterygodermatites (Paucipectines) jagerskioldi, Spirura guianensis and Physaloptera herthameyerae n. sp. is first described. This is the first record of nematodes of the genera Physaloptera and Spirura in hosts of the genus Gracilinanus. The high prevalence of spirurids in 72.3% of the G. agilis collected probably is influenced by the arboreal and diet behaviors.
