    Abstract:

    The colour of raw fillets and the texture of cooked fillets of European catfish (Silurus glanis) were studied. The catfish fillets resulted from two types of farming conditions used in France. Sensory and instrumental analyses were performed on the fillets. Two farming parameters were found to affect the colour and texture of European catfish fillets: water temperature and farming time. The shorter the farming time was, the lighter the fillets were, while a higher water temperature produced yellower and greener fillets. A higher water temperature and a longer farming time produced softer cooked fillets, while the higher the water temperature was, the less juicy the cooked fillets were. The biochemical composition of the two feeds used was also analysed, in order to establish a relationship between European catfish fillet composition and feed. Dry matter, protein, lipid and carbohydrate contents were determined. The fatty acid profile was determined by GC-FID and GC/MS. This work has established that European catfish has a biochemical composition characteristic of semi-fat fish, that the protein content is affected by water temperature, and that the lipid content depends largely on feed. This work has also highlighted that the proportions of fatty acids can be affected by rearing conditions, by feed, or by both rearing conditions and feed with a significant interaction between these two factors.

    A new gas chromatography–olfactometric method, gas chromatography–global olfactometry omission detection (GC–GOOD), was applied to dynamic headspace odor extracts of Silurus glanis (European catfish). The GC–GOOD method is based on the omission test theory and uses a gas chromatograph coupled with a three-way valve and an a flame ionization detector. The GC–GOOD method enabled the identification of key families of volatile compounds in the S. glanis global odor and the elucidation of the interactions occurring between these families. Significant main effects were observed for the families of volatile compounds exhibiting cooked odor, grassy odor and alcohol, solvent and plastic odors. Omission of these families involved a loss of odor similarity.

    Teleost fishes interact with diverse microbial communities, playing crucial functions for host fitness. While gut microbiome has been extensively studied, skin microbiome has been overlooked. Specifically, there is no assessment of the relative impact of host and environmental factors on microbiome variability as well as neutral processes shaping fish skin microbiome. Here, we assessed the skin microbiome of a Siluriforme, the European catfish (Silurus glanis) sampled in four sites located in Southwestern France. We assessed the relative roles of individual features (body size and genetic background), local environment and neutral processes in shaping skin microbiome. Catfish skin microbiome composition was distinct to that of other freshwater fish species previously studied with high abundances of Gammaproteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. We found no effect of catfish individual genotype and body size on the structure of its associated skin microbiome. Geographical location was the best catfish skin microbiome structure predictor, together with neutral models of microbiome assembly.

    In this study, the results of conventional stomach-content analysis are compared with the recent DNA metabarcoding approach on faeces to identify fish species consumed by non-native European catfish Silurus glanis in the Garonne River (south-western France), with a special emphasis on anadromous prey. Fourteen prey species were identified in the stomach contents or faeces, including four anadromous fish species. Despite higher intestine than stomach emptiness, more species were identified through faecal analysis (11 of 14) than through stomach-content analysis (five of 14) suggesting that DNA metabarcoding on faeces is an efficient, non-intrusive technique to study the diet of predatory fishes.

    We filmed and analysed, in natural and field conditions, behaviours of large-bodied European catfish (Silurus glanis) individuals (body size ranging from 80 to 220 cm) exposed to a hook baited with 20 cm-long Carassius spp. Among a total of 95 individuals observed, 80 % of the catfish clearly demonstrated interest in the bait but attacks were performed only 25 % of the time and only 12.5 % of fish were hooked. More than half of the individuals (55 %) were observed swimming toward the bait and then turning around or tasting it without performing any attacks. These observations showed that individual fish motivation and behaviour are important factors in determining whether European catfish are attracted to bait and eventually hooked.

    The European catfish, Silurus glanis, was widely introduced in western Europe, and it has now established self-sustaining populations in numerous large rivers of western France. Using data collected from surveys conducted by the French National Agency for Water and Aquatic Environment (Onema) from 1989 to 2010 in more than 500 sites throughout the country (10636 electrofishing surveys), we investigated the potential impact of the European catfish on fish communities in French rivers. In the first part of the analysis, we compared trends observed before and after the European catfish was established at given sites (before-after analysis). Species richness, evenness and diversity decreased significantly after the European catfish was established at 1.4%, 1.4% and 5.8% of the sites, respectively. Total fish biomass and density decreased significantly at 6.6% and 2.9% of the sites, respectively. In the second part of the analysis, we compared sites with European catfish against sites lacking European catfish during the same period (with-without analysis). Fish species richness was significantly higher in sites with European catfish. No significant differences in fish diversity, evenness, total fish biomass or density were found between sites with or without European catfish. While our results indicate that the European catfish may in a few cases impact fish communities or populations, it does not appear to be responsible for a countrywide collapse in fish assemblages.

Findings of this study indicated that both SM and PAP were equally effective in replacing FM up to 60% in the practical diet of Silurus glanis. Total replacement of FM either with SM or PAP induced negative influences on growth and feed utilization.

Fish were fed with either of three isonitrogenous (35% crude protein) and isocaloric (16.70 MJ/kg DE) experimental diets. The diets were: fish meal (FM) based diet, fish meal protein replaced with a combination of vegetal protein and rendered animal protein (AP), and fish meal replaced with vegetal protein only (SM). Weight gain (%), specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio, and apparent net protein utilization of FM diet fed groups were similar (P>0.05) with AP diet fed group being significantly higher (P < 0.05) than the SM group. Feed conversion ratio with FM diet was similar (P < 0.05) to that of the AP diet, and significantly lower than SM diet. The present experiment indicated that vegetal protein alone cannot replace total FM protein in the diet of Silurus glanis, however, vegetal protein and rendered animal protein combined, can replace total fish meal protein, with no detrimental effect on growth performance, feed utilization, and body composition.

Feed conversion ratio with FM diet was similar (P < 0.05) to that of the AP diet, and significantly lower than SM diet. The present experiment indicated that vegetal protein alone cannot replace total FM protein in the diet of Silurus glanis, however, vegetal protein and rendered animal protein combined, can replace total fish meal protein, with no detrimental effect on growth performance, feed utilization, and body composition.     Abstract:

    In order to replace expensive fish meal, plant based feeds were compared to traditional wels (Silurus glanis) feed in a 60 days experiment. Three types of feed were applied squealer feed (S), squaeler feed combined with forage fish (S+F) and standard wels feed (W). The feed conversion ratio was 0.88±0.21 at the W group, 1.74±0.21 at the S and 1.48±0.23 in case of S+F group. Specific growth rate was higher at wels feed (2.34%), than in the case of the squealer feed (1.77%) or even in the case of forage fish addition (1.95%). The slaughter loss was the least at the fish fed with forage fish in addition (34.6±2.0%). The size of the liver (2.8±0.32%) and the fat content of the viscera (4.1±1.0%) was significantly higher at W group than those of the other treatments.
