    Sistotrema brinkmannii (Bres.) J. Erikss. (Basidiomycotina, Hydanaceae), commonly regarded as a wood decay fungus, was consistently isolated from bareroot nursery Pinus banksiana Lamb. seedlings. S. brinkmannii was found in ectomycorrhizae formed by Thelephora terrestris Ehrh., Laccaria laccata (Scop.) Cooke, and Suillus luteus (L.) Roussel. In pure culture combinations with sterile P. banksiana and Populus tremuloides Michx. seedlings, S. brinkmannii colonized root cortical cells while not killing seedlings. Colonization by S. brinkmannii appeared to be intracellular but typical endo- or ectomycorrhizae were not formed. The fungus did not decay roots, although it was shown to produce cellulase in enzyme tests. Results suggest a unique association between S. brinkmannii and seedling roots that is neither mycorrhizal nor detrimental; its exact function remains to be elucidated.

    The coinoculation efficacy of the ectomycorrhizal fungi Laccaria laccata and Thelephora terrestris on the growth and mycorrhizal development of Pinus patula seedlings was studied and compared to individual inoculation of these fungi in a nursery. The total number of mycorrhizas was higher in seedlings inoculated with the combined inoculum than with the individual inocula. The colonization by T. terrestris was higher than L. laccata when the seedlings were inoculated with the two fungi simultaneously. Coinoculation significantly increased the height and dry weight of the seedlings compared with individual inoculation, both in steam-sterilized and unsterilized soil.

    In vitro syntheses of ectomycorrhizas of Pinus patula, P. pseudostrobus, P. oocarpa and P. elliotii with Amanita muscaria, Laccaria fraterna, L. laccata, Pisolithus tinctorius, Rhizopogon luteolus, Scleroderma citrinum and Thelephora terrestris were attempted. Most of the fungi initiated mycorrhizal formation within 2 weeks after inoculation. Laccaria fraterna and S. citrinum formed mycorrhizas after 6 weeks of inoculation. Amanita muscaria failed to form mycorrhizas during the 12 week period of observation. The degree of colonization of different mycorrhizal fungi varied with different species of Pinus .

    Abstract:

    Th effect of fenvalerate 20% EC (a synthetic pyrethroid) on the growth of two ectomycorrhizal fungi, Thelephora terrestris and Laccaria laccata, was studied in vitro. In the case of T. terrestris, mycelial growth was promoted at lower concentrations of the insecticide but inhibited at higher concentrations; mycelial growth of L. laccata decreased with increase in concentration. The effect of the insecticide at three concentrations (0.25, 0.5, 1.5 ppm) was also studied on ectomycorrhizal formation in 4-month-old seedlings of Pinus patula in nursery trials. At lower concentrations the insecticide had no significant effect on mycorrhizal formation.

    $\bullet$ We investigated the influence of Thelephora terrestris, an ectomycorrhizal fungus, on the concentration of nitrogen in needles of Pinus sylvestris L. seedlings and their mycorrhizal structure within four seasons of growth. $\bullet$ Seedlings were grown in four treatments: (I) inoculated + 0.030 g N, (II) inoculated + 0.045 g N, (III) non-inoculated + 0.030 g N, (IV) non-inoculated + 0.045 g N under laboratory conditions and later planted in post-agricultural land. $\bullet$ For inoculated treatments, statistically significant differences in N concentration of needles were observed for two- and four-year-old seedlings. The number of ectomycorrhizae and concentration of N in needles were negatively correlated. After four seasons of growth the greatest numbers of ectomycorrhizae were present on seedlings from treatment II, and the smallest on seedlings from treatment IV. $\bullet$ Two-year-old seedlings had been colonized by at least six different fungal taxa, i.e. Cenococcum geophilum, Hebeloma crustuliniforme, Rhizopogon sp., Suillus bovinus, Thelephora terrestris and a non-identified one. Treatments I and II were dominated by the ectomycorrhizae of T. terrestris and their number was significantly greater than in treatments III or IV.   • Enzymatic Activity of Thelephora terrestris and Hebeloma crustuliniforme in Cultures and Mycorrhizal Association with Scots Pine Seedlings

    The activities of enzymes such as cellulase, pectinase, proteinase, chitinase and acid phosphatase produced in vitro by T. terrestris and H. crustuliniforme, as well as the activity of β-glucosidase in roots of inoculated Scots pine seedlings, were studied. In pure cultures an isolate of T. terrestris produced nine of ten enzymes, whereas an isolate of H. crustuliniforme produced only five enzymes. The activity of enzymes was higher in T. terrestris cultures than in H. crustuliniforme, the only exception being neutral proteinase. It was observed that in roots of seedlings inoculated with T. terrestris levels of β-glucosidase was about 107 per cent higher activity than in roots of non-inoculated seedlings. The enzyme level in roots inoculated with H. crustuliniforme was 44 per cent lower than in those inoculated with T. terrestris.

    Thelephora terrestris (Erhr.) Fr. is a very common ectomycorrhizal symbiont (ECM) in conifer trees, however the role of this ubiquitous fungus in nurseries and Scots pine plantations is still unknown. It is described as tolerant of high nitrogen availability and therefore was taken into consideration as an important ECM partner of seedlings, particularly after replanting on post agricultural land. In laboratory the seedlings of Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) were inoculated with T. terrestris (Tt/IBL/2) or not inoculated (control) and grown in containers in two different regimes of nitrogen fertilization (4g N x kg -1 and 6 g N x kg -1 ). Next year these seedlings were outplanted in post agricultural land and 6 months later, the number and identity of some mycorrhizas were studied. It was found, that mycorrhizal abundance was higher in the inoculated treatments than in non-inoculated ones. PCR RFLP analysis confirmed share of two different isolates of Thelephora engaged in mycorrhizal symbiosis. Part of mycorrhizas had the same pattern of RFLP as the isolate used to inoculation. Similar results were obtained in second year of experimental study in the field what confirmed the persistence of artificially introduced T. terrestris in post agricultural soil as an important component of the ECM community.

    summary Eleven species of mycorrhizal fungi, selected from stands of either Eucalyptus spp., Allocasuarina spp. or Pinus radiata D. Don were tested in an aseptic system for their abilities to initiate ectomycorrhiza with Allocasuarina littoralis (Salisb.) L. Johnson, Casuarina equisetifolia ssp. equiselifolia L. and C. cunninghamiana Miq. Elaphamyces sp., Hysterangium sp., Laccaria laccata (Scop ex Fr.) Bk. & Br., Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch, Scleroderma sp. and Thelephora terrestris (Ehrh.) Fr. formed ectomycorrhizas on all three hosts. Amanita sp. formed ectomycorrhizas on A. littoralis and C. cunninghamiana but not on C. equisetifolia. Paxillus involutus (Batch ex Fr.) Fr. formed ectomycorrhizas on A. littoralis only. P. tinctorius also formed ectomycorrhizas with C. obesa Miq. Rhizapogon luteolus Fr. & Nord, Suillus granulatus (L. ex Fr.) Kuntze and S. piperatus (Bull ex Fr.) O. Kuntze colonized the rhizosphere of Casuarinaceae but did not form ectomycorrhizas. The comparative intensity of ectomycorrhizal infection by P. tinctorius and L. laccata was assessed on four host species. Infection intensity ranged from 13 to 70%, of laterals infected and decreased for both fungal species in the order: A. littoralis > Eucalyptus pilularis Smith > C. equisetifolia > C. cunninghamiana. An exogenous supply of glucose induced greater and sometimes earlier, ectomycorrhizal infection of A. littoralis, C. equisetifolia and C. cunninghamiana by P. tinctorius and L. laccata than that in the absence of glucose. The optimum glucose level for these fungi and hosts in this synthesis system was 750 μg glucose (g soil)−1.
