A new species of Ferorhinella with an unusual pattern of sexual size dimorphism (Hemiptera, Cercopidae, Tomaspidinae)
Zootaxa, 2019Co-Authors: Andressa PaladiniAbstract:The spittlebug genus Ferorhinella (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) was described by Carvalho & Webb (2004) based on type species Sphenorhina brevis Walker (1851). Fennah (1968) had previously consigned this species to the genus Tropidorhinella. However, we consider Ferorhinella to be a valid genus based on its small size and the distinctive shape of the male genitalia: the parameres broad apically with two subapical process and the aedeagus with a bifid apex S-shaped. The proportion of the head and the shape of the aedeagus and parameres are also quite unlike those of other genera of Cercopidae, including Tropidorhinella. Until now, Ferorhinella was a monotypic genus. Tropidorhinella has four species.

Several included species are economically important pests of major agricultural crops and cultivated pasture grasses. Taxonomically, Cercopidae is divided into two subfamilies: the paraphyletic Old World Cercopinae and the monophyletic New World Ischnorhininae. Results are here presented from an investigation of phylogenetic relationships within Ischnorhininae based on DNA sequences from seven loci (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, Histone 2A, Histone 3, Wingless, Cytochrome Oxidase I, and Cytochrome Oxidase II) generated from exemplars of 119 spittlebug species. The resulting topology is used to test alternative higher-level classification hypotheses of Ischnorhininae and, with fossil-calibration, dates were estimated for major events in the evolutionary history of Cercopidae, including a much earlier divergence date (around 68–50 Mya) than previously reported in the literature. In addition, for the first time in Cercopidae, ancestral states of some predation avoidances strategies were reconstructed, with results suggesting an origin of aposematic coloration in the Cercopidae ancestor, with subsequent independent losses of aposematic coloration in multiple lineages.

The most recent classification scheme proposed by Fennah in 1968 divided the New World Cercopidae into four tribes: Tomaspidini, Ischnorhinini, Hyboscartini and Neaenini. Herein we present a phylogenetic analysis of Ischnorhininae using 108 morphological characters and including 53 of the 59 recognized genera, to evaluate the tribal-level classification and understand the processes underlying the current distributional patterns of these genera. We found significant support for the monophyly of many Neotropical genera, but Fennah's tribal classification is revised because tribes Neaenini, Ischnorhinini and Tomaspidini were recovered as polyphyletic. Hyboscartini was synonymized with Tomaspidini. A taxonomic key to tribes and genera of Neotropical spittlebugs is provided based mostly on recovered apomorphies. The biogeographical analysis suggests a Neotropical origin of ischnorhinines, more specifically in northwestern South America. This was possibly coincident spatially and temporally with the origin of grasses, with ancestral range expansions southward to the Amazonian and Parana regions, and posterior vicariant events, possibly related to the expansion of forests in the Chacoan region, the South America diagonal of open formations. Dispersals to the Chacoan region and to the Nearctic region are hypothesized to have occurred only within genera. In the Chacoan region it is associated with more recent events, such as the diversification of C4 grasses and establishment of the savannas and seasonally dry forests.

Mahanarva ( Mahanarva ) rubripennis is transferred to the subgenus Mahanarva ( Ipiranga ).

Niche Modeling of Economically Important Mahanarva (Hemiptera, Cercopidae) Species in South and Central America: Are Brazilian Spittlebug Sugarcane Pests Potential Invaders of South and Central America?
Journal of Economic Entomology, 2019Co-Authors: Christian Schöbel, Gervasio Silva CarvalhoAbstract:Mahanarva fimbriolata, Mahanarva spectabilis, Mahanarva liturata, and Mahanarva posticata (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) are known pests in South American sugarcane and pasture plantations. They cause phytotoxicity by feeding directly from plant sap, greatly decreasing their production. In this work, we applied Species Distribution Modeling using the Maxent algorithm to analyze these four spittlebug species possible occurrence in South and Central America. Therefore, current and future bioclimatic variables, as well as elevation and other agricultural variables, were used within RStudio. Future climatic variables were differentiated between the years 2050 and 2070 with several representative concentration pathways. Overall, the species showed various suitable habitats in different countries of South and Central America. Nevertheless, when compared with future climate analysis, the number of suitable habitats is declining due to climate change. Elevation, isothermality, and different precipitation variables were mainly responsible for the results. We were able to analyze that spittlebug populations are not limited by temperature, but rather by other abiotic factors, such as precipitation.

One of these genera is Ocoaxo Fennah, 1968 with 30 species. The most recent species to be accepted into this genus, Ocoaxo costaricanus, was described by Nast (Ann Zool 33:93-101, 1975). Herein, two new species of Ocoaxo from Mexico are described. One of these new species forms a complex together with Ocoaxo assimilis (Walker) and Ocoaxo varians (Stal). The complex has economic importance in the mountainous areas of the states of Puebla and Oaxaca because it attacks Pinus spp. and causes a disorder called "pine decline." Additionally, dichotomous keys were designed to identify the Ocoaxo Fennah groups and also the species of the subgroup bivittus.

The Manaharva species are all from the Americas, and a few species are important pests in pasture grasses and sugarcane. There are no reports of any Manaharva species from North America, including Mexico and areas to the north. Here, a new species is described from Mexico and a key to the species of Mahanarva from Central America and Mexico is proposed.

At the far northeastern margin of the species range in Maine, a cluster of populations is monomorphic for the presence of traverse orange dorsal lines against a black background. The narrow gap separating monomorphic black and monomorphic lined populations is less than 10 km wide, shows no evidence of a hybrid zone, and is without consequential physical barriers or ecological breaks. This sharp and unexpected division of color forms seems to have persisted for at least 90 years. It appears to be the sharpest divide ever recorded between geographically adjacent populations monomorphic for alternative aposematic color forms. About 45 kilometers to the southwest of this dividing line, three closely situated populations, surrounded by monomorphic black populations, are polymorphic for the two color forms. These observations are at variance with several expectations for aposematic species: (1) that local populations will be monomorphic for warning coloration, (2) that adjacent populations monomorphic for different local color forms will be linked by populations with mixed or hybrid forms, and (3) that geographic boundaries between contrasting aposematic color forms should be temporally unstable.

In the present report, a new species combination, Ectemnonotum rutilans (Butler, 1874), comb. nov., is proposed in the Oriental spittlebug genus Ectemnonotum Schmidt (transferred from Leptataspis Schmidt).

It contains the typical set of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), and a large control region. The gene organization, nucleotide composition, and codon usage are similar to other Cercopoidea mitogenomes. However, the control region, including multiple types of tandem repeats, is longer than those of other spittlebugs. All PCGs initiate with standard start codon of ATN or TTG and share the complete stop codon of TAA or TAG, whereas cox2 and cox3 end with a single T. All tRNAs have the typical clover-leaf structure except for trnS1. In addition, the unpaired nucleotide is detected in the anticodon stem of trnS1 and the acceptor stem of trnR. The secondary structures of rrnL and rrnS comprise 44 helices and 27 helices, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis is performed on the 13 PCGs and two rRNAs of 24 Cicadomorpha mitogenomes. Both the maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods robustly support the relationships of (Membracoidea + (Cicadoidea + Cercopoidea)). Within Cercopoidea, the monophyly of Cercopidae is also supported. Furthermore, we firstly present the taxonomic status of Phymatostetha with the relationships of (Cosmoscarta + (Phymatostetha + Paphnutius)).

The complete genome is 15,426 bp in length. It contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and a control region (A + T-rich region). All the PCGs initiate with the standard start codons ATN and all the tRNAs can be folded into typical cloverleaf secondary structures except tRNASer(GCT), which only formed a simple loop. The control region is consisted of 861 bp bases located between the srRNA gene and the tRNAlle–tRNAGln–tRNAMet(IQM) gene cluster. The measure of complete mitogenome sequence of C. bispecularis will provide fundamental data for the phylogenetic and biogeographic studies of the Cercopoidea and Hemiptera.

PLOS ONE, 2014Co-Authors: Cuiping Bu, Benjamin Wipfler, Aiping LiangAbstract:: The present study compares the mitochondrial genomes of five species of the spittlebug tribe Callitettixini (Hemiptera: Cercopoidea: Cercopidae) from eastern Asia. All genomes of the five species sequenced are circular double-stranded DNA molecules and range from 15,222 to 15,637 bp in length. They contain 22 tRNA genes, 13 protein coding genes (PCGs) and 2 rRNA genes and share the putative ancestral gene arrangement of insects. The PCGs show an extreme bias of nucleotide and amino acid composition. Significant differences of the substitution rates among the different genes as well as the different codon position of each PCG are revealed by the comparative evolutionary analyses. The substitution speeds of the first and second codon position of different PCGs are negatively correlated with their GC content. Among the five species, the AT-rich region features great differences in length and pattern and generally shows a 2-5 times higher substitution rate than the fastest PCG in the mitochondrial genome, atp8. Despite the significant variability in length, short conservative segments were identified in the AT-rich region within Callitettixini, although absent from the other groups of the spittlebug superfamily Cercopoidea.

Adults of this spittlebug were collected from a maize field and were reared in the laboratory on fruits of Phaseolus vulgaris L. (Fabales: Fabaceae). Nymphs were reared on roots of rice seedlings. Adults, eggs, and nymphs were all maintained in an artificial climate chamber at 27 ± 1°C, photoperiod of 14:10 (L:D) h, and 70 ± 5% relative humidity. The incubation period averaged 102.63 d. The five stadia averaged 5.36, 5.48, 7.06, 7.92, and 12.67 d, respectively. Instars can be distinguished by differences in morphological features, body size, and body color.

PeckAbstract:Mahanarva andigena was detected in Colombia for the first time in 1999, in the municipality of Tumaco (Narino), on the south Pacific coast, associated with the hosts Sorghum halepense and Saccharum officinarum. In order to complement studies aimed at an understanding of the biology of other species of spittlebugs associated with cultivated grasses in Colombia, this research was designed to establish an initial base on the morphological differentiation, duration of the developmental stages, and certain aspects of the reproductive biology. The morphological studies permitted the differentiation and characterization of the egg, nymph and adult, at the same time determining the duration of the life cycle under semi-controlled conditions. For the eggs (27°C, 100% R. H.), the mean time to eclosion was 16.4 days. For the nymphs (mean temperature min/max 19.5/29.9°C, 95% R. H.) the mean development time was 48.4 days, divided in 6.4, 8.6, 8.2, 10.1 and 15.1 days for the five instars, respectively. For the adults (mean temperature min/max 19.5/29.9°C, 95% R. H.), the mean longevity was 21.4 days, 25.6 days for the females and 18.3 days for the males. Under the conditions of the study, the total duration of the life cycle of M. andigena was 75.5 days. M. andigena exhibited a flexibility for oviposition substrate, with a preference for uncovered soil with 51.2% of the recovered eggs; 16.4, 32.4 and 0% were recovered from soil under litter, surface of the stem, and the litter, respectively. The information provided strengthens certain patterns established for the spittlebug complex in grasses and broadens our understanding of the biological variation. As the first study on a spittlebug species associated with sugar cane in Colombia, a base line is established for biological studies of spittlebugs as emerging pests of the sugar cane industry.
