    The study was conducted In Kalamata, Messinia, province of the Peloponnese, where infestations of Pseudauacaspis pentagona (Targioni Tozzetti) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) were found on kiwi trees Actinidia deliciosa (Actinidiaceae), peach trees Prunus persica (Rosaceae) and mulberry trees Morus alba (Moraceae). Data on biology and ecology of the scale were recorded by samplings of infested branches of mulberry trees and by examining them in the laboratory, during the years 2016-2018. Pseudaulacaspis pentagona is an oviparous and amphigonic species. The fecundity of the scale fluctuated between 97 and 133 eggs per female. In the area of Kalamata it completed 3 generations per year and overwintered as mated pre-ovipositing female. The main natural enemies of P. pentagona recorded in the area of Kalamata are the coccinellid predators: Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.) and Rhyzobius lophanthae Blaisdell.

    Abstract:

    The Phenology and natural enemies of the scale insect Kermes echinatus Balachowsky (Hemiptera: Kermesidae), which infests the holly oak Quercus ilex (Fagaceae), were studied between November 2015 and November 2017, in southern Greece (Kalamata, Peloponnese). Kermes echinatus is a univoltine, oviparous and biparental species. It overwinters as 1st instar nymphs, settling on the branches of the trees. The second instar nymphs appear by the middle of April, followed by 3rd instar nymphs until the end of May. The male larvae and pupae were recorded from the end of April to the end of May. Mature females, pre-ovipositing and ovipositing adults, were recorded during May and June. The newly hatched crawlers appeared by the end of June, which remained at this stage, settled on branches during the rest of summer and winter periods till next April. The parasitoid species Metaphycus gennaroi Guerrieri & Noyes and the hyperparasite Cheiloneurus claviger Thomson (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) were recorded on the colonies of the scale. The parasitism level of the scale reached to 21%. The predator Chilocorus bipustulatus L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) was also recorded on the colonies of the scale.

    Data on ecology of the Hemiptera species found in the forest area of the Taygetus Mountain during the years 2004–2008 are presented. The scale insects Eulecanium sericeum (Lindinger) (Hemiptera: Coccidae), Nemolecanium graniformis (Wünn) (Hemiptera: Coccidae), Physokermes hemicryphus (Dalman) (Hemiptera: Coccidae), Physokermes inopinatus Danzig & Kozár (Hemiptera: Coccidae), Dynaspidiotus abietis (Schrank) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) and the aphid Cinara confinis (Koch) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) were found infesting fir trees Abies cephalonica (Pinaceae) and the scale species Lineaspis striata (Newstead) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) and Planococcus vovae (Nasonov) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) were found on Juniperus oxycedrus (Cupressaceae). The coccids P. hemicryphus , P. inopinatus , N. graniformis and the diaspidid D. abietis complete one generation per year in the study area. The predatory species Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.) , Exochomus quadripustulatus (L.) , Ceratomegilla undecimnotata (Schneider) , Coccinella septempunctata L. and Scymnus sp. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were observed on the infested plants. The encyrtid Pseudorhopus testaceus (Ratzeburg) parasitized female adults of P. hemicryphus . The parasitization level reached 47.8% in July.

    ABSTRACT The effect of temperature on development and survival of Chilocorus bipustulatus L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), a predator of many scale insects, was studied under laboratory conditions. The duration of development of egg, first, second, third, and fourth larval instars, pupa, and preovioposition period at seven constant temperatures (15, 17.5, 20, 25, 30, 32.5, and 35°C) was measured. Development time decreased significantly with increasing temperature within the range 15–30°C. Survival was higher at medium temperatures (17.5–30°C) in comparison with that at more extreme temperature regimens (15 and >30°C). Egg and first larval instars were the stages where C. bipustulatus suffered the highest mortality levels at all temperatures. The highest survival was recorded when experimental individuals were older than the third larval instar.     Abstract:

    The ecology of the coccid Protopulvinaria pyriformis infesting the laurel Laurus nobilis was studied from October 2003 to September 2005 in SW Greece. The coccid is parthenogenetic and oviparous, producing increased amounts of honeydew throughout the year. It settles mainly on the lower leaf surface. The scale overwinters as egg, 1st and 2nd instar nymph and adult and completes several overlapping generations every year. The life cycle was estimated to last in nature ~52 days during winter and 29–33 days during summer. Infestation density ranged between 0.3 and 2.8 live scales per cm^2 of leaf surface. Metaphycus helvolus was the only wasp found to parasitize P. pyriformis . Parasitism rate reached 31.2% during the second year of the study. The scale was able to resist parasitization by encapsulating the parasitoid’s eggs. Maximum encapsulation rate was estimated up to 23% of the adult scales. Encapsulated eggs ranged from 1 to 5 eggs per adult scale. Predation rate reached 7% and it was attributed to the coccinellid Chilocorus bipustulatus . The above information could be important for planning a sustainable control strategy for this new pest in Greece.

    Abstract:

    The ecology of the purple scale Lepidosaphes beckii (Newman) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) was studied on citrus, in the area of Kalamata (Messinia - Peloponnese) from May 2009 to May 2011. Observations on infested citrus branches were conducted to study the phenology of the scale. Yellow sticky traps were hung in infested trees and examined to monitor the flights of male L. beckii as well as the flights of adults of parasitoids and predators of this pest. Lepidosaphes beckii mainly infested the leaves and fruits and to a lesser extent the shoots and stems. During the period of the study all developmental stages of L. beckii were found. Sticky transparent band traps were also placed on shoots and were examined to monitor the fluctuation in the population of crawlers. From the crawlers caught in the traps three population peaks were recorded in June, August and October. Natural enemies of the scale consisted of the parasitoids Aphytis lepidosaphes Compere and Encarsia sp. (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), which together parasitized up to 32% of L. beckii as well as the predators Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.) and Rhyzobius lophanthae Blaisdell (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Des pieges collants jaunes ont ete suspendus dans les arbres infestes et examines pour surveiller le vol des mâles de L. beckii, ainsi que le vol des adultes de parasitoides et de predateurs de ce ravageur. Lepidosaphes beckii infestait principalement les feuilles et les fruits et, dans une moindre mesure, les pousses et les tiges. Tous les stades de developpement de L. beckii ont ete trouves pendant la duree de l'etude. Des bandes-pieges collantes transparentes ont egalement ete places sur les pousses et ont ete examines pour suivre les fluctuations de la population de larves. Les captures de larves ont permis d'identifier trois pics de population en juin, aout et octobre. Les ennemis naturels de la cochenille etaient les parasitoides Aphytis lepidosaphes Compere et Encarsia sp. (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), qui ensemble parasitaient jusqu'a 32% des L. beckii, ainsi que les predateurs Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.) et Rhyzobius lophanthae Blaisdell (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Кpoмe тoгo, клeйкиe пpoзpaчныe лeнтoчныe лoвyшки нaклaдывaлиcь нa пoбeги и пpoвepялиcь для oбcлeдoвaния флyктyaций в пoпyляции бpoдяжeк. Ha ocнoвe oтлoвa этиx бpoдяжeк в лoвyшки былo зapeгиcтpиpoвaнo тpи пoпyляциoнныx пикa: июньcкий, aвгycтoвcкий и oктябpьcкий. Ecтecтвeнными вpaгaми щитoвки были aфeлиниды Aphytis lepidosaphes Compere, a тaкжe вид poдa Encarsia, кoтopыe пapaзитиpoвaли дo 32% L. beckiias, a тaкжe xищники Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.) и Rhyzobius lophanthae Blaisdell (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae).

  • The Aphidophagus Coccinellid (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) Species in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey

    Abstract:

    Aphidophagus coccinellid (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera) species were determined in cultivated and uncultivated fields in Kahramanmaras. Furthermore, aphid species preyed upon by each coccinellid species were also specified. Adult coccinellids observed feeding on the aphid species were collected by suction tube while immature stages were collected with their preys and cultivated in order to obtain adults. This study yielded 33 coccinellid species feeding upon 59 aphid species. The most encountered coccinellid species that fed on many aphid species were Coccinella septempunctata (L.) 41, Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) 19, Scymnus subvillosus (Goeze) 15, Adalia fasciatopunctata revelieri Muls. 10 and Oenopia conglobata (L.) 9. On the other hand, the coccinellid species that fed on only 1 aphid species were Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.), Exochomus quadripustulatus (L.), Harmonia quadripunctata Puntop, Hyperaspis repensis (Herbst), Nephus nigricans Weise, Scymnus levaillanti Muls. and Stethorus gilvifrons (Muls.).

  • Effect of three diaspididae prey species on development and fecundity of the ladybeetle Chilocorus bipustulatus in the laboratory

    Abstract:

    The purpose of this investigation was to determine the most suitable prey for the development and fecundity of the predatory coccinellid, Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.) on three different diaspidid species: Aspidiotus nerii Bouche, Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell), and Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (Targioni-Tozzetti). Life tables were constructed at constant 25°C and the developmental time, longevity, fecundity, and the sex ratio were determined. Individuals fed with A. nerii displayed the shortest larval and pupal developmental time (26.0 days), lowest immature mortality rate (16.6%), highest net reproduction rate (264.7 females/ female), shortest generation time (72.9 days), and the highest intrinsic rate of increase (0.077 females/female/day). The results showed that under laboratory conditions C. bipustulatus developed best on A. nerii.

    Abstract Studies were carried out on chemical control of white peach scale (WPS), Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (Targ.-Tozz.) (Hom.: Diaspidae), the main pest of peach in the East Mediterranean region of Turkey in 1992 and 1993. The effectiveness of two insect growth regulators, summer oil, methidathion, and summer oil + a reduced dosage of methidathion were evaluated under field conditions. The side-effects of the same pesticides on the predators Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.) (Col.: Coccinellidae) and Cybocephalus fodori minor (Endrody-Younga) (Col.: Cybocephalidae) were examined under laboratory conditions. Buprofezin gave sufficient control of WPS in the field experiments and had only limited side-effects on WPS-predators in the laboratory. Moderate WPS-populations were successfully controlled by fenoxycarb and summer oil. The side-effects of these pesticides were comparable to those of buprofezin. Methidathion with and without summer oil is able to suppress WPS-populations, but should not be used in integrated pest management programmes because of high toxicity towards WPS predators.

    Biological and ecological aspects of the scale Ceroplastes sinensis are investigated on citrus in central Greece through regular samplings during 1999-2001 on Citrus sinensis (Sapindales: Rutaceae) in Attiki County. The scale was univoltine. Overwintering stages were the third-instar nymph and the adult female. From the end of May until the end of June the population comprised preovipositing females. Oviposition occurred from mid-June until mid-July and hatching took place during July. First- and second-instar nymphs were recorded from the end of July until the end of August, and from mid-August until the end of September, respectively. Third-instar nymphs appeared at the end of August and were present until the beginning of September. Some of the population of third-instar nymphs reached the adult stage during October and November, whilst the remainder completed development in the following April. Small numbers of male nymphs were recorded during October and November. The mean fecundity of adult females was 3260 ± 770 eggs per female. The most abundant natural enemy of C. sinensis was Scutellista caerulea (Fonscolombe) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), whose eggs, larvae and pupae were found in up to 42% of the total live population of the scale. Two predators, Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.) and Exochomus quadripustulatus (L.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), were also observed.

    Prey consumption of all larval instars and adults of Chilocorus bipustulatus Linnaeus (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), fed on the scale Aspidiotus nerii Bouch (Homoptera: Diaspididae), was studied. The average prey consumption of the 1 s t , 2 n d , 3 r d and 4 t h larval instar at 25°C, was 9.3, 16.6, 29.1 and 84.3 female adults of A. nerii, respectively. The duration of development in days was 5.9 for the 1 s t , 4.2 for the 2 n d , 4.4 for the 3 r d and 7.9 for the 4 t h larval instar. The average total prey consumption of adult males was 865.9 and of females 1448.1 adult females of A. nerii. The average longevity of male and female adults was 70.1 and 65.1 days, respectively.

    The purpose of this investigation was to determine the most suitable prey for the development and fecundity of the predatory coccinellid, Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.) on three different diaspidid species: Aspidiotus nerii Bouché, Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell), and Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (Targioni-Tozzetti). Life tables were constructed at constant 25°C and the developmental time, longevity, fecundity, and the sex ratio were determined. Individuals fed with A. nerii displayed the shortest larval and pupal developmental time (26.0 days), lowest immature mortality rate (16.6%), highest net reproduction rate (264.7 females/female), shortest generation time (72.9 days), and the highest intrinsic rate of increase (0.077 females/female/day). The results showed that under laboratory conditions C. bipustulatus developed best on A. nerii.     WOS: A1997WB30500010Studies were carried out On chemical control of white peach scale (WPS), Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (Targ.-Tozz.) (Hem.: Diaspidae), the main pest of peach in the East Mediterranean region of Turkey in 1992 and 1993. The effectiveness of two insect growth regulators, summer oil, methidathion, and summer oil + a reduced dosage of methidathion were evaluated under field conditions. The side-effects of the same pesticides on the predators Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.) (Col.: Coccinellidae) and Cybocephalus fodori minor (Endrody-Younga) (Col.: Cybocephalidae) were examined under laboratory conditions. Buprofezin gave sufficient control of WPS in the field experiments and had only limited side-effects on WPS-predators in the laboratory. Moderate WPS-populations were successfully controlled by fenoxycarb and summer oil. The side-effects of these pesticides were comparable to those of buprofezin. Methidathion with and without summer oil is able to suppress WPS-populations, but should not be used in integrated pest management programmes because of high toxicity towards WPS predators.
