    Abstract:

    Abstract Previous reports revealed the importance of Thailand for diversity, systematics and evolution of powdery mildews. This report provides records of four additional species and variety belonging to the genus Erysiphe sect. Uncinula (Erysiphales) found in Thailand. Morphological descriptions of powdery mildew specimens found on hosts of four families and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on 28S rRNA gene and rDNA ITS sequences are provided. Three new records of Erysiphe sect. Uncinula spp. for Thailand are listed, and E. liquidambaris var. acalycinae is described.

    Abstract:

    Estimation of molecular clocks for ITS and 28S rDNA in Erysiphales Abstract Based on a comparative phylogenetic analysis of Goloviomyces and their host tribes of the Asteraceae, we speculate that Golovinomyces first acquired parasitism to the Asteraceae after migration of the family into the Northern Hemisphere and before the divergence of the tribe Carduaeae. The divergence time of the Carduaeae is estimated to be 25.2 Myr ago based on the molecular clock of rbcL sequences of the Asteraceae. When 25.2 Myr is given at the node of the first split of the phylogenetic tree of Golovinomyces, nucleotide substitution rates of the Erysiphales are calculated to be 2.52 x 10-9 per site per year (0.01D = 3.97 Myr) in the ITS region and 6.5 x 10-10 per site per year (0.01D = 15.4 Myr) in the D1 and D2 regions of the 28S rDNA.     New records of Phyllactinia, Parauncinula and Sawadaea species (Erysiphales) in Japan are reported with morphological and molecular data, including the first discovery of Ph. actinidiae-latifoliae in Japan, and the first Japanese record of Ph. pyri-serotinae on Aria alnifolia, Pa. septata on Quercus variabilis and Q. robur, and Sa. polyfida on Acer australe. In addition, Phyllactinia collections of K. Sawada deposited in TNS were re-examined and some of them were designated as lectotypes or syntypes.

    Several new records of Golovinomyces and Podosphaera species (Erysiphales) in Japan are reported with morphological and molecular data, including the first finding of G. cynoglossi in Japan, the first occurrence of Euoidium sp. on Trigonotis peduncularis, G. riedlianus on Galium trifloriforme var. nipponicum and P. xanthii on Verbena brasiliensis, as well as the first morphological descriptions and molecular data for G. rubiae on Rubia hexaphylla, P. curvispora on Aria alnifolia, P. tridactyla on Cerasus leveilleana, and P. xanthii on Parasenecio hastatus subsp. tanakae and V. bonariensis based on Japanese specimens.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Two new species of the Erysiphales, Erysiphe viburni-plicati and Podosphaera photiniae, are described and illustrated in this paper. These two fungi were first reported in 1977 and 1996 as Podosphaera spp. from Japan, but have not yet been formally described and named. We performed detailed morphological re-examinations and phylogenetic analyses based on new specimens. The results clearly show that these fungi are new, hitherto undescribed species. Molecular analyses of E. viburni-plicati indicate that this fungus belongs to the genus Erysiphe, not to Podosphaera, although it has chasmothecia with a single ascus. This result reveals that monoascus-type chasmothecia are not confined to Podosphaera and Cystotheca as they are also formed by some Erysiphe species.

In the course of routine examinations of powdery mildews collected in Idaho and Oregon, USA, some of the identified species proved to be new to North America, in some cases on new host plants. Leveillula papilionacearum and L. picridis are first records from the USA. Astragalus filipes, Dalea ornata and D. searlsiae are new hosts for Leveillula papilionacearum. Enceliopsis, Heliomeris and Machaeranthera are new host genera for L. picridis. Additional records refer to powdery mildew species which have been rarely reported from North America or first records on certain hosts. Zusammenfassung: Braun, U. & Mohan, S. K. 2013: Neufunde und neue Wirtsarten von Mehltaupilzen (Erysiphales) aus Idaho und Oregon (USA). Schlechtendalia 27: 7-10. The nomenclature of the Eurasian elm powdery mildew, Erysiphe clandestina (≡ Uncinula clandestina ), is revised. This name is not available for this fungus within the genus Erysiphe since E.M. Fries’s work sanctioned the later homonym E. clandestina (based on Alphitomorpha clandestina , currently Podosphaera clandestina ). Following the current taxonomy of the Erysiphales based on phylogenetic examinations and morphological reassessments, a valid name for this species in Erysiphe is necessary. Therefore, the new name Erysiphe bivonae is proposed. Zusammenfassung: BRAUN, U. & MINNIS, A.M. 2008: Revision der Nomenklatur von Erysiphe clandestina (≡ Uncinula clandestina ).   • Australia: A continent without native powdery mildews?

    In contrast to Eurasia and North America, the powdery mildews (Ascomycota, Erysiphales) are largely understudied in Australia. There are over 900 species known globally, with less than 50 recorded from Australia. Some of these records are doubtful as the identifications were presumptive, being based on host plant-pathogen lists from overseas. Australian herbaria contain many undetermined powdery mildew specimens and an outdated nomenclature is still in use. The Department of Agriculture-sponsored Modern Diagnostics Project identified the Erysiphales as a diagnostic gap that was addressed by a 5-day workshop in 2018. This resulted in (i) an up-to-date list of all the taxa that have been identified in Australia based on published DNA barcode sequences prior to the workshop; (ii) precise identification of 117 specimens freshly collected from across the country; and (iii) precise identification of 30 herbarium specimens collected between 1975 and 2013. Identifications were done based on both morphology and DNA barcodes. Altogether, 39 species representing 10 genera were confirmed in Australia, including two genera and ten species newly recorded during the project. In Eurasia and North America the number of powdery mildew species is more than 10 time greater. Interestingly, powdery mildew infections have been recorded on only eight native Australian plant species in the genera Acacia, Acalypha, Eucalyptus, Ixodia, Jagera, Senecio and Trema. All but one of these infections were caused by polyphagous species that infect many other host plants both overseas and in Australia. The data indicates that (i) the native Australian vegetation may have evolved without being exposed to any native powdery mildews; and (ii) all the species of the Erysiphales that are known to occur in Australia may have been introduced since the European colonisation of the continent.

    During the past years, nrDNA ITS sequences have supported the identification of many powdery mildew fungi because comprehensive analyses showed that differences in these sequences have always correlated with the delimitation of different species and formae speciales of the Erysiphales. Published data, obtained using direct sequencing of the PCR products, suggested that even one to five nucleotide differences in the ITS sequences delimit different, albeit closely related, species, and/or indicate differences in host range patterns. Here we show that such differences in the ITS sequences can be detected even in a single sample of a powdery mildew fungus. We sequenced the ITS region in 17 samples, representing six powdery mildew species, both directly and after cloning the PCR products. Among these, samples of O. longipes exhibited two or three, samples of O. neolycopersici three or four, those of an Oidium sp. from Chelidonium majus up to seven, and a sample of another Oidium sp. from Passiflora caerulea two different ITS types determined after cloning. No ITS nucleotide polymorphisms were found in samples of O. lycopersici and Erysiphe aquilegiae. This suggests that some powdery mildew taxa are more variable at the ITS level than others. Thus, although the ITS sequences determined by direct sequencing represent robust data useful in delimitation and phylogenetic analysis of distinct species of the Erysiphales, these need to be used with precaution, and preferably determined after cloning, especially when dealing with closely related taxa at species and sub-species levels. With this method a hitherto undetected genetic diversity of powdery mildews can be revealed.

    Since 2003, Torenia fournieri plants grown for experimental purposes were repeatedly infected by powdery mildew in a laboratory in Hungary. Based on morphological characteristics, the pathogen belonged to the mitosporic genus Oidium subgen. Reticuloidium, the anamorph stage of Golovinomyces. The rDNA ITS sequence was identical to that of two other powdery mildew fungi, infecting Arabidopsis and Veronica, respectively, in different parts of the world. According to a previous phylogenetic analysis of ITS and 28S rDNA sequences, those two powdery mildews belong to a recently evolved group of Golovinomyces characterized by multiple host range expansions during their evolution. Both the ITS sequence and the morphological data indicate that the powdery mildew anamorph infecting Torenia also belongs to this group. It is likely that the powdery mildew infections of the experimental T. fournieri plants, native to south-east Asia, were the result of a very recent host range expansion of a polyphagous Golovinomyces because (i) T. fournieri is absent from our region, except as an experimental plant grown in the laboratory, (ii) the powdery mildew fungus infecting this exotic plant belongs to a group of Golovinomyces where host range expansion is a frequent evolutionary scenario, (iii) cross-inoculation tests showed that this pathogen is also able to infect other plant species, notably A. thaliana and tobacco, and (iv) no Golovinomyces species are known to infect T. fournieri anywhere in the world. Although host range expansion has often been proposed as a common evolutionary process in the Erysiphales, and also in other biotrophic plant pathogens, this has not been clearly demonstrated in any case studies so far. To our knowledge, this is the first convincing case of a host range expansion event in the Erysiphales.

    This paper includes 53 species of Erysiphales collected on the Masurian Lakeland (North-East of Poland). Most of them are common in our country. Erysiphe lythri on Lythrum salicaria are seldom met. Some other powdery mildews were found on host plants, where they appear rarely or are found only in some regions of Poland.

    This paper presents the list of 50 species of Erysiphales and describes their localities concentrated mainly within north-eastern Poland. New localities and host have been determined. Many of the identified species were common in the area under studies although they have teen considered hither to rare in Poland.

    The occurrence of Erysiphales in selected regions of Northern Poland was studied in detail between 1981 to 1991. Special attention was paid to the degree of infection of host plants caused by powdery mildew. More species of fungi were found in urban regions, but in several cases the severity of lesions was greater in suburban areas. A hypothesis is put forth that urban environmental pollution inhibits the development of the studied fungi.

    This manuscript presents data on the occurrence of hyperparasitic fungi colonizing the mycelium of selected species of Erysiphales: Erysiphe alphitoides, E. hypophylla, E. palczewskii, Golovinomyces sordidus, Podosphaera fusca and Sawadaea tulasnei in the urban environment. In the paper the effect of hyperparasites on the development of fungal hosts at diversified level of transport pollution is emphasized. Over a three-years experiment, the presence of hyperparasites was confirmed on all analyzed Erysiphales species, with prevailing species from the genus Ampelomyces. The representatives of other genera: Alternaria, Aureobasidium, Cladosporium, Stemphylium and Tripospermum were also observed on mycelium of E. alphitoides and E. palczewskii. The hyperparasites occurred only on stations situated at the main roads were found not to affect the extent of plant infection by fungi of the order Erysiphales, but reduced the number of chasmothecia.

    Fungi of the genus Ampelomyces are the major antagonists of Erysiphales fungi being a significant group of phytopathogens. The hyperparasites attack various developmental stages of powdery mildews. As a result the infested ascomata do not reach the stage of maturity, do not form appendages nor ascospores, which is linked with a reduction of the source of primary infections. Studies conducted so far have mainly been devoted to Ampelomyces fungi application in the biological control of powdery mildews on crops, whilst a few only have been focused on the ecology of these mycoparasites on Erysiphales fungi infecting plants, especially in the urban environment. The present study addresses the natural occurrence and effect of Ampelomyces fungi on the development of ascomata of powdery mildews species. The material was collected in 2005–2009 in several cities of the northeastern Poland. First time ever Ampelomyces spores are reported in mature ascomata of Erysiphales with fully developed appendages. This phenomenon has been observed in the case of two species, viz.: Erysiphe flexuosa on Aesculus spp. and E. vanbruntiana var. sambuci-racemosae on Sambucus racemosa and is presumably linked with improved implementation, propagation and probably better survival during winter months.

    Zusammenfassung: JAGE, H., KLENKE, F. & KUMMER, V. 2010: Neufunde und bemerkenswerte Bestatigungen von phytoparasitischen Kleinpilzen in Deutschland – Erysiphales (Echte Mehltaupilze). Schlechtendalia 21 : 1–140. Die vorliegende Arbeit enthalt Neufunde von Mehltaupilzen (Erysiphales) aus Deutschland als Erganzung zur Ubersicht von BRANDENBURGER & HAGEDORN (2006). Es werden aus allen Bundeslandern Deutschlands mit Ausnahme des Saarlandes insgesamt 1.994 Neufunde von Erysiphales-Wirt-Kombinationen aufgelistet. Besonders viele Fundmeldungen stammen aus Brandenburg, Sachsen und Sachsen-Anhalt, wahrend in den Bundeslandern/Stadtstaaten Bremen, Hamburg, Hessen und Mecklenburg-Vorpommern noch deutliche Defizite vorliegen. 17 Eysiphales-Sippen sind seit 2000 neu in Deutschland nachgewiesen. Insgesamt 97 matrices novae – zumeist diverse Kulturpflanzen – werden mitgeteilt. 49 bzw. 59 Pilz-Wirt-Kombinationen sind neu fur Europa bzw. Mitteleuropa und weitere 199 Kombinationen neu fur Deutschland. In 54 Fallen stellen die mitgeteilten Funde die ersten exakt lokalisierten, in der Literatur pauschal aus Deutschland angefuhrten Pilz-Wirt-Kombinationen dar. Ein Teil der gelisteten Funde wies Mischinfektionen mit anderen phytoparasitischen Kleinpilzen auf. Dies wird summarisch dargestellt. Eine Liste der in der Literatur angefuhrten, jedoch bisher aus Deutschland nicht eindeutig nachgewiesenen Pilz-Wirt-Kombinationen wird mitgeteilt. The present list contains new records of powdery mildews (Erysiphales) from Germany as supplements to the survey of BRANDENBURGER & HAGEDORN (2006). A total of 1.994 new records of Erysiphales-host-combinations from all federal states of Germany, excluding the Saarland, are listed. Most of them are from Brandenburg, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, whereas Bremen, Hamburg, Hessen and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are less represented. Since 2000, 17 Erysiphales taxa have been collected in Germany for the first time.     Abstract:

    The Erysiphales species Phyllactinia hippophaes Thum. ex S. Blumer was found for the fi rst time on cultivated Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) near Groskayna (Saxony-Anhalt) in October 2009. This fungus was considered to be extinct in Germany. Intensive searching in Saxony-Anhalt and the Potsdam area (Brandenburg) yielded many additional records, most of them from former brown coal mining areas or in Sea Buckthorn plantations.
