  • Fragilaria striatula lyngbye a little known marine diatom from chile
    Gayana Botánica; Vol. 59 Núm. 1 (2002); 35-41, 2021
    Co-Authors: Patricio Rivera, Fabiola Cruces
    Abstract:

Although the marine species Fragilaria striatula Lyngbye is widely distributed in the North Atlantic and the Arctic, has rarely been reported from the southeastern Pacific coasts of Chile. Using material deposited at the Diatom Collection of the University of Concepcion, Chile, the morphological features of this taxon were observed and recorded under light and electron microscopes. The specimens studied were collected between 20o13’S and 53o39’S, revealing a wide distribution along the Chilean coast, especially as an epiphyte on larger algae.

  • analysis of the type material of synedra perminuta bacillariophyceae with the description of two new Fragilaria species from sweden
    Phytotaxa, 2020
Co-Authors: Bart Van De Vijver, Luc Ector
    Abstract:

During a revision of the genus Fragilaria in Europe, two unknown Fragilaria taxa were observed in Erken Lake, Sweden, that showed some resemblance to Fragilaria perminuta, a species described in the nineteenth century from the Great Lakes in the United States. The type material of Synedra perminuta from Lake Erie, U.S.A. (Grunow sample 2592) was analysed. Detailed morphological analysis, using both light and scanning electron microscope observations and comparison with the type material, showed that both taxa from Sweden should be described as new species: Fragilaria goeyersiana sp. nov. and F. vandevondeliana sp. nov. The separation of the two taxa is based on valve outline, shape of the apices and stria density. Comparisons are made with similar taxa and brief notes on their ecology are added.

  • Eunotia enigmatica sp nov., a new planktonic diatom from Brazil and the transfer of Fragilaria braunii HUSTEDT to the genus Peronia (Bacillariophyceae)
    Fottea, 2017
Co-Authors: Lívia F. Costa, Luc Ector, Carlos E. Wetzel, David M. Williams, Denise C. Bicudo
    Abstract:

Eunotia is a diatom genus characterized by a short raphe system restricted to both valve poles and by the presence of rimoportulae. As part of a survey examining the genus, Eunotia enigmatica sp. nov. is described from ultra oligo- to oligotrophic and slightly acidic reservoirs in Sao Paulo State, southeast Brazil. The species is unusual in having a short distinct raphe, and a 'fragilarioid' appearance with long cells and marginal spines. It was commonly found in the planktonic community as well as on sediments of the studied reservoirs. It seems to be adapted to an open water existence, and is similar to E. croatana and E. pseudoFragilaria both described from North America. Additionally, type material of another similar looking species, Fragilaria braunii, was analysed using light and scanning electron microscopy and a new combination is proposed for it in the genus Peronia.

  • taxonomy and ecology of Fragilaria billingsii sp nov and analysis of type material of synedra rumpens var fusa Fragilariaceae bacillariophyta from brazil
    Phytotaxa, 2016
Co-Authors: Simone Wengrat, Eduardo A. Morales, Luc Ector, Carlos E. Wetzel, Pryscilla D Almeida, Denise C. Bicudo
    Abstract:

Synedra rumpens var. fusa was originally described by Patrick, but there are only a few subsequent records of this variety in the literature. Analysis of samples from Brazilian reservoirs containing a morphologically similar taxon led us to the analysis of the type material of S . rumpens var. fusa , performed using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In the present manuscript, an amendment to the description of the var. fusa is made and its transfer to the genus Fragilaria as F . fusa comb . et stat . nov . is proposed. Moreover, Fragilaria billingsii sp . nov . is described from a large multipurpose reservoir from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Comparative discussions with morphologically related taxa found in the literature are presented. Regarding ecological preferences, the new species was found living in slightly acidic and meso-eutrophic waters.

  • two new diatoms in the genus Fragilaria lyngbye fragilariophyceae from tropical reservoirs in brazil and comparison with type material of f tenera
    Phytotaxa, 2016
Co-Authors: Pryscilla D Almeida, Eduardo A. Morales, Luc Ector, Carlos E. Wetzel, Denise C. Bicudo
    Abstract:

Two new diatom species, Fragilaria neotropica sp . nov . and F . spectra sp . nov ., from six reservoirs with different trophic status in the Alto Tiete River Basin, Sao Paulo, Brazil, are described. Descriptions are based on light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) data revealing that both taxa have distinctive features that separate them from each other and from other taxa currently in Fragilaria . Fragilaria neotropica has high stria density, broader (sometimes deformed) central area, and capitate (often deflected) apices. This species was found in high abundance as part of the phytoplankton, periphyton and surface sediments in mesotrophic reservoirs. On the other hand, F . spectra has indistinct striae (not clearly seen in LM), wide sternum, two rimoportulae per valve and lacks spines. This taxon was abundant in the phytoplankton and periphyton of oligotrophic to mesotrophic reservoirs. A discussion of morphological and ecological aspects in the light of available literature is presented, as well as a morphological comparison based on LM and SEM analysis of the original material of F . tenera .

  • taxonomy and ecology of Fragilaria microvaucheriae sp nov and comparison with the type materials of f uliginosa and f vaucheriae
    Cryptogamie Algologie, 2015
Co-Authors: Carlos E. Wetzel, Luc Ector
    Abstract:

Abstract A new diatom species from freshwater environments in France is described. Fragilaria microvaucheriae sp. nov. is illustrated and discussed based on populations from the Loire-Brittany basin and compared with the original (type) material of Fragilaria vaucheriae (Kutz.) J.B.Petersen (= Exilaria vaucheriae Kutz.) from Germany and Fragilaria uliginosa Kulikowskiy et al., recently described from a peat bog in Mongolia. Additional populations of Fragilaria pectinalis (O.F.Mull.) Lyngb. from the Rhone Alpes region (France) are also investigated in detail including its environmental preferences in order to compare with the new species. Fragilaria microvaucheriae is similar to F. vaucheriae but present smaller cell dimensions and higher density of striae. It occurs in slight acidic waters. The new species has been identified in the past as F. vaucheriae, Fragilaria capucina sensu auct., Fragilaria austriaca (Grunow) Lange-Bert. or Fragilaria pectinalis. The morphology of the new species and similar taxa ...
