We illustrate this assertion by an in-depth study of Latvian labour migration to Guernsey. Since the 1990s, low incomes and high unemployment in post-Soviet Latvia combine with niche-specific labour demands in Guernsey to create migratory flows of mainly female workers. The small-scale nature of this circular migration system allows a deeper theorisation of the many linkages between migration and VFR. In particular we deploy time-geography and rhythmanalysis to explore the various ways that migration and VFR are enfolded within each other, within the life-courses of the protagonists, and within the capitalist rhythms of temporary labour migration. Empirical evidence comes from interviews with 90 Latvian migrants in Guernsey and with 16 employers. VFR mobilities are space-time events of co-presence which can take place either in Latvia or in Guernsey. Both directions of visits can involve touristic functions, and VFR to Guernsey can also carry the potential to stimulate further migration. Further research could pay more attention to gender aspects and to prospects for permanent return migration to Latvia.

Womens Studies International Forum, 2014Co-Authors: Aija LulleAbstract:Synopsis In this article I analyse how socioeconomic constraints structure the geographical mobility of Latvian migrant women working on the island of Guernsey. A shifting notion of gendered care is revealed through a time-geographic investigation of distant emplacements of workplace and home, and through the neoliberal-informed evaluations by the mothers themselves. Their justifications emphasise the belief that care from a distance should be prioritised over physical proximity to those in need of care. With examples from interviews with mothers who have provided care during their movements between Latvia and Guernsey, I demonstrate how the outcomes of shifting notions of gendered care are placed within a wider context of the gender regime in a transforming Latvia. A specific version of a neoliberal mother, shaped by gender regimes in post-socialist Latvia and a demand for female labour in Western Europe, emerges among women with care responsibilities.

Genetic parameters and evaluation of rear legs (rear view) for Brown Swiss and Guernseys.

Thornton, Nicolas GenglerAbstract:Genetic parameters were estimated for rear legs (rear view; RLRV) and 15 current linear type traits of Brown Swiss and Guernsey dairy cattle. The Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders' Association of the USA and the American Guernsey Association began scoring RLRV in 2004. For Brown Swiss, 8,502 records were available for 7,676 cows in 417 herds; Guernsey data included 5,437 records for 4,749 cows in 229 herds. Nine unknown-parent groups were defined for each breed, each with 2 birth years. The model included fixed effects for the interaction of herd, appraisal date, and parity; appraisal age within parity; and lactation stage within parity and random effects for animal, permanent environment, and residual error. The multitrait analysis for RLRV and the 15 linear type traits used canonical transformation, multiple diagonalization, and a decelerated expectation-maximization REML algorithm. For Brown Swiss, heritability was 0.102 for RLRV and ranged from 0.099 for rear legs (side view) to 0.453 for stature. For Guernseys, heritability ranged from 0.078 for RLRV to 0.428 for stature. For Brown Swiss, the highest genetic correlation with RLRV was 0.71 for rear udder width; the most negative correlation was -0.19 with rump angle. For Guernseys, the highest genetic correlations with RLRV were 0.43 for rear udder width and 0.42 for body depth; the most negative correlation was -0.46 with rear legs (side view). With heritability near 0.10, RLRV should be useful in selection for improved locomotion. Release of genetic evaluations for RLRV began in May 2006 for Brown Swiss and Guernseys.

Data included records of 4314 Ayrshire, 7845 Brown Swiss, 18,115 Guernsey, 1,135,752 Holstein, 67,862 Jersey, and 787 Milking Shorthorn cows from across the US. Records were preadjusted for length of lactation. Fixed effects of herd-year, calving age, and calving month were included in animal models for estimation of variance components. Additive genetic estimates from REML relative to a phenotypic variance of 1.00 were .07 for Ayrshires, .07 for Brown Swiss, .11 for Guernseys, .09 for Holsteins, .09 for Jerseys, and .08 for Milking Shorthorns; permanent environmental estimates were .25, .26, .22, .21, .20, and .35; and herd-sire interaction estimates were .04, .02, .00, .02, .02, and .01. Effects of calving age were similar for all regions of the US but differed for Jerseys and Holsteins. Effects of calving month were similar for all breeds. Cows calving during summer had the highest lactation means for somatic cell score from sample days. Impact of calving month was greatest in the Southeast.

Les Pierres de Mémoire: The Life History of Two Statue-Menhirs from Guernsey, Channel Islands
The Lives of Prehistoric Monuments in Iron Age Roman and Medieval Europe, 2015Co-Authors: Heather SebireAbstract:Many prehistoric monuments survive in the landscape and are revered by later generations but there is a special category of artefacts and monuments that reflect images of ourselves, sometimes with just faces and sometimes as life-size human figures. On Guernsey, in the Channel Islands, just off the north-west coast of France, two statuemenhirs or standing stones survive that appear to represent female figures, although the form of the stones themselves may have masculine traits also. Guernsey is the most westerly of the Channel Islands and so it is particularly surprising that these exceptional human representations should be found there (Kinnes 1995). The menhirs have witnessed a long history and have been refigured in modern times possibly in an attempt to Christianize them. One has even been given the local nickname of the ‘Grand Mere’, implying a benign maternal presence. Guernsey is one of a group of small islands that lie strategically placed in the western Channel off the northern coast of France, collectively known as the Channel Islands. The islands of Alderney, Sark, Herm, Lihou and Jethou are part of its Bailiwick, but the largest island of Jersey is independent. Guernsey is positioned some 50 kilometres off the western coast of the Cotentin peninsula of Normandy in France and 120 kilometres from mainland Britain. The Bay of Saint Malo, in which Guernsey and the other Channel Islands are situated, has a very large tidal range due to its position and currents. As a result of this, the inter-tidal zone is extensive. Guernsey is 7.5 kilometres at its widest point and 14 kilometres long, with an area of about 63 square kilometres. This area increases at low tide by some 11 square kilometres. As the great French novelist Victor Hugo famously said, . . . The Channel Islands are fragments of France that fell into the sea and were gathered up by England [ ... ] Of the four islands, Sark, the smallest, is the most beautiful; Jersey, the largest, is the prettiest; Guernsey, wild and charming shares their characteristics. SEA CHANGE: NEW EVIDENCE FOR MESOLITHIC AND EARLY NEOLITHIC PRESENCE IN THE CHANNEL ISLANDS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO Guernsey AND THE RISING HOLOCENE SEA
Oxford Journal of Archaeology, 2010Co-Authors: Heather Sebire, John RenoufAbstract:Summary This paper summarizes the results of recent research on the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods in the Channel Islands and focuses on the integration of new information into the long- running efforts to explain the processes by which the Neolithic became established in Guernsey and the other Channel Islands. This research builds on Kinnes's work on the complex monument at Les Fouaillages, Guernsey in the early 1980s and the review by Patton of Neolithic communities in the Channel Islands in 1995. Many rescue and research excavations in Guernsey have provided new evidence which informs the complex relationships between Guernsey, the other Channel Islands and the north-west of France at the time of the Mesolithic and Early Neolithic. Analysis of the data takes into account recent French research (and in particular Cassen et al. 2000 and Guyodo and Hamon 2005). Also, at the time of writing, Kinnes's work on Les Fouaillages is being prepared for publication (Kinnes et al. forthcoming, see below). The developments are discussed against new and existing data for rising sea levels and the consequent isolation of Guernsey as an island.

The Lukis family of Guernsey and antiquarian pursuits in Scotland
2009Co-Authors: Heather SebireAbstract:Frederick Corbin Lukis lived in Guernsey in the Channel Islands from 1788 to 1871. He was an archaeologist and polymath who created a remarkable archaeological and natural history archive, the majority of which is now held in the collections of Guernsey Museum. His archaeological work included excavations in Guernsey and the other Channel Islands, and also in England and France, mainly on megaliths. He corresponded on a range of topics with antiquarians in many places, including Scotland. His third son, William Lukis, carried out surveys of many monuments in Scotland with his friend and colleague Henry Dryden. Many of these plans are also held in the collections of Guernsey Museum along with various notes and letters. This paper highlights some of the archive relating to Scotland and gives an appendix of material held at Guernsey Museum.

The Management of the Maritime Archaeological Heritage in the Bailiwick of Guernsey: a Case Study

Guernsey Museum manages the display and interpretation of this maritime heritage and, in conjunction with the Receiver of Wreck, administers the legal protection of historic wreck. Over the last 25 years a considerable amount of research has been undertaken on many aspects of the islands’ maritime past. Museum displays and media presentations have been made to disseminate information about the islands’ maritime archaeology to the wider world. This paper will highlight the various aspects of maritime archaeology in Guernsey and illustrate how Guernsey Museum manages this rich archaeological resource. © 2004 The Nautical Archaeology Society

genetic variation at three polymorphic loci in wild and hatchery stocks of the abalone haliotis tuberculata linnaeus

Gosling, John DonlonAbstract:Abstract The abalone, Haliotis tuberculata, is a gastropod mollusc of commercial importance in Europe with considerable potential for aquaculture. A wild population of H. tuberculata from Guernsey, Channel Islands was compared to two hatchery populations; one an F1 stock produced by a hatchery in Guernsey, the other an F3 stock cultured at the Shellfish Research Laboratory (SRL) at Carna, Ireland. The F1 and SRL stocks were each derived from the Guernsey wild population and reproductively isolated from this population for one and three generations, respectively. The three populations were screened for allozyme variation at three polymorphic loci, Gpi, Pgm and Mdh, using starch-gel electrophoresis. When compared with the wild population, both the F1 and SRL samples were very similar in terms of mean effective number of alleles per locus and levels of heterozygosity. However, the SRL stock did show a reduced number of rare alleles when compared to the F1 and Guernsey samples but without showing any evidence of inbreeding or reduction in levels of heterozygosity. Effective population size was calculated from direct census (Ne) and temporal changes in allelic frequencies ( N k ). Ne was estimated to be 48 and 54.5 for SRL and F1, respectively, whereas calculated N k was 21.4 and 23.9, respectively.
