Pathogenicity of Meloidogyne incognita (CHITWOOD) on Some Pepper (Capsicum spp.) Cultivars

Its production was being constrained by the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita an important pest of pepper. This study was done to provide information on the pathogenicity of M. incognita on pepper.Four pepper cultivars rated susceptible were used. In pot experiment, pepper seedlings were transplanted into pots and inoculated at one month with 0, 1,500, 2,500, 3,500 or 5,000 M. incognita eggs extracted with sodium hypochlorite. The experiment was factorial in Completely Randomized Design. In field experiment, Split-plot Design consisted of main plots (nematicide-treated and nematicide-untreated) with pepper cultivars as the subplots were used. Plant heights measured, number of leaves counted. At termination, fresh shoot weight, dry shoot weight, fresh root weight were measured. Final Nematode Population (FNP), Reproductive Factor (RF) and Galling Index (GI) were estimated. There were direct relationships between the inoculation levels of M. incognita on pepper, Galling Index, Final nematode Population but inverse relationship with Reproductive Factor. Meloidogyne incognita infection of pepper resulted in gall formation, reduced height by 58.7±12.3%, number of leaves 10±3.1%, fresh shoot weight 39.4±10.5%, dry shoot weight 34.0±8.6%, fresh root weight35.6±9.8% and yield 67.9±18.6%. Meloidogyne incognita was pathogenic on the pepper cultivars. Keywords : cultivars, final nematode population, galling index, inoculation, reproductive factor, root-knot nematode. .

Chemical and non-chemical control of Meloidogyne incognita infecting cowpea under field conditions

Adekunle, B FawoleAbstract:Field studies were conducted in 1998 and 1999 to investigate the effects of air-dried milled neem leaves, Siam weed leaves and roots each at 30kg/ha and 50kg/ha and carbofuran at 1.5kg a.i./ha and 2.5 kg a.i/ha on Meloidogyne incognita infecting cowpea cv. IT 86D- 715. Carbofuran-treated plants had the highest grain yield (1.7 t/ha), and the least root galling (0.6) at harvest while carbofuran – treated soil had the least nematode population after harvest and population of Pratylenchus spp was reduced by 83.2%, Helicotylenchus spp. by 86.5%, Xiphinema spp by 89.1% and Meloidogyne incognita by 94.8%. This was followed by the grain yield in neem leaf-treated plants (1.35 t/ha) with a root galling of 1.4, while nematode population in neem leaf-treated soil was reduced as follows: Pratylenchus spp., 67.6%, Helicotylenchus spp., 64.1%, Xiphinema spp., 64.8% and M. incognita , 83.4%. Grain yield in Siam weed –treated plants (0.8 t/ha) with a root galling of 1.7, was higher than that of control plants and population of Pratylenchus spp. was reduced by 49.9%, Helicotylenchus spp. by 59.1%, Xiphinema spp. by 63.2% and Meloidogyne incognita by 74.9%. Response of lettuce cultivars to Meloidogyne javanica and Meloidogyne incognita race 1 and 2

Two days after transplanting, the plants were inoculated with 5,000 eggs and potential second-stage juveniles of the nematode under test per pot. The Rutgers tomato was used as the standard for the viability of Meloidogyne javanica and Meloidogyne incognita race 1 and 2. The variables to be evaluated were gall index, egg mass index and nematode reproduction factor, which were evaluated 60 days after inoculation. The results showed that the Ithaca, RS-1397, Raider Plus, Challenge, L-104, IP-11, Salinas 88, Calona, Desert Queen, Classic and Vanguard 75 cultivars were resistant to Meloidogyne incognita race 1, with a reproduction factor which ranged from 0.19 to 0.88, and that the Desert Queen, L-104, Salinas 88, Vanguard 75, Robinson, RS-1397, Challenge, Raider Plus, Classic, Calona, Ithaca, Lady, IP-11 and Winterset cultivars were resistant to Meloidogyne incognita race 2, with a reproduction factor of between 0.23 and 0.93. All the cultivars under evaluation were resistant to Meloidogyne javanica, with a reproduction factor of less than 1.0.

NEMATICIDAL ACTIVITY OF PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS AGAINST Meloidogyne incognita

The presence of a quinone group, whether ortho or para, was associated with high nematicidal activity. Meta-hydroxy as well as coumarin groups also induced high activity against the root-knot juveniles. Maximum activity was recorded with coumestrol and juglone.
