This study focuses on the molecular systematics and taxonomy of Southern Hemisphere species currently treated in the genera Underwoodia and Gymnohydnotrya. Species in these genera have been identified as the monophyletic /gymnohydnotrya lineage, but no further research has been conducted to determine the evolutionary origin of this lineage or its relationship with other Pezizales lineages. Here, we present a phylogenetic study of fungal species previously described in Underwoodia and Gymnohydnotrya, with sampling of all but one described species. We revise the taxonomy of this lineage and describe three new species from the Patagonian region of South America. Our results show that none of these Southern Hemisphere species are closely related to Underwoodia columnaris, the type species of the genus Underwoodia. Accordingly, we recognize the genus Geomorium described by Spegazzini in 1922 for G. fuegianum. We propose the new family, Geomoriaceae fam. nov., to accommodate this phylogenetically and morphologically unique Southern Hemisphere lineage. Molecular dating estimated that Geomoriaceae started to diverge from its sister clade Tuberaceae c. 112 MYA, with a crown age for the family in the late Cretaceous (c. 67 MYA). This scenario fits well with a Gondwanan origin of the family before the split of Australia and South America from Antarctica during the Paleocene-Eocene boundary (c. 50 MYA).

LeeAbstract:Fungal mitospores may function as dispersal units and/ or spermatia and thus play a role in distribution and/or mating of species that produce them. Mitospore production in ectomycorrhizal (EcM) Pezizales is rarely reported, but here we document mitospore production by a high diversity of EcM Pezizales on three continents, in both hemispheres. We sequenced the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and partial large subunit (LSU) nuclear rDNA from 292 spore mats (visible mitospore clumps) collected in Argentina, Chile, China, Mexico and the USA between 2009 and 2012. We collated spore mat ITS sequences with 105 fruit body and 47 EcM root sequences to generate operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Phylogenetic inferences were made through analyses of both molecular data sets. A total of 48 OTUs from spore mats represented six independent EcM Pezizales lineages and included truffles and cup fungi. Three clades of seven OTUs have no known meiospore stage. Mitospores failed to germinate on sterile media, or form ectomycorrhizas on Quercus, Pinus and Populus seedlings, consistent with a hypothesized role of spermatia. The broad geographic range, high frequency and phylogenetic diversity of spore mats produced by EcM Pezizales suggests that a mitospore stage is important for many species in this group in terms of mating, reproduction and/or dispersal.

It is based both on past data, gathered mainly by Dr Philibert Riel in the late 19th century, and on data gathered by the author who, for the past fifteen years or so, has regularly been prospecting the area around Lyon in search of Discomycetes. The author starts by describing the locations prospected, goes on to specify the historical context in which the data were gathered, then attempts to put it into perspective by using reference periods, during some of which the fungi were considered an important part of the local natural heritage.Un premier inventaire des champignons appartenant à l'ordre des Pezizales (Ascomycota), communément appelés pézizes, est proposé pour le département du Rhône. Estudios quimiotaxonómicos en especies del género Ascobolus (Ascobolaceae-Pezizales)

Para ello se utilizaron 47 cepas monospóricas y 22 siembras mixtas de cepas sexualmente compatibles. En los cruzamientos interespecíficos de A. immersus x A. bistisii, los oídios colocados sobre el micelio base no gerrninaron y tampoco indujeron la formación de ascogonios. Los cruzamientos entre las demás especies formaron primordios incipientes pero no fértiles. Los resultados sugieren la existencia de una sustancia hormonal responsable en la formación de los apotecios muy similar en estas especies y por tal razón A. fiufuraceus está más relacionada a A. gamundii que a las otras especies. Los resultados obtenidos al estudiar el crecimiento vegetativo en cultivo en medio líquido muestran variación entre las especies, que difieren entre sí en la extensión de las fases de la curva. Considerando la duración de la fase de crecimiento exponencial, se reconocen tres grupos. La fase estacionaria, de variada longitud, frecuentemente es muy corta, entrando rápidamente en la fase de muerte, acompañada por la autólisis del micelio. Se examinaron los caracteres micro y macromorfológicos y se aplicaron técnicas numéricas. En el análisis isoenzimático se utilizaron los patrones de bandas de seis sistemas isoenzimáticos: AAT, EST, ACP, GDH, IDH y SOD. Los fenogramas obtenidos a partir del análisis de agrupamientos (UPGMA) mostraron dos gmpos principales de especies correspondientes a dos secciones del género: secc. Ascobolus y secc. Dasyobolus, con algunas diferencias dentro de cada sección. Aunque existe homogeneidad intraespecífica ya que no se observaron grandes diferencias en los estados de los caracteres entre las cepas monospóricas y siembras mixtas, se encontró variación para EST en A. gamundii y para ACP en A. ferrugineus. Los resultados de este trabajo permitieron establecer que las doce especies estudiadas constituyen unidades taxonómicas independientes.The aim of this work was the delimitation of twelve species of the genus Ascobolus on the base of the analysis of morphological and cultural characters, the vegetative growth in liquid culture media and electrophoretic patterns of intracellular enzymes. Forty seven monosporic strains and twenty two mixed cultures of compatible strains of the genus were used. In A. immersus x A. bístisii interfertility crossing, when oidia were placed on a block of agar lying on a base mycelium, germination failed and there was no induction of ascogonium formation. Crossing between other species, formed incipient primordia, but none of them were fertile. These results suggest that hormonal substances responsible for apothecial formation are very similar in some of these species being, A. furfuraceus more closely related to A. gamundii than to other species. Vegetative growth of the different species showed variation in the duration of the different phases of the growth cycle. Three groups can be recognised considering the extension of the exponential phase of growth. The stationary phase, which differs in its length, is frequently very short, entering quickly in the phase of death, accompanied by the autolysis of the mycelium. Morphological characters were examined and numerical techniques were used. Six intracellular isozyme systems were analyzed: AAT, EST, ACP, GDH, IDH and SOD. The phenograms obtained from the analysis of grouping (UPGMA) showed two groups of species, corresponding to the two sections of the genus: sec. Ascobolus and sec. Dasyobolus with some differences within of each section. Though a high intraespecific homogeneity was observed since there were not differences in the status of the characters among monosporic strains and mixed cultures some variation was observed in EST patterns of A. gamundii and ACP patterns of A.ferrugineus.
