    Abstract:

    Eidophasia assmannisp. nov., a new species of Plutellidae from the alpine zone of Russian Altai Mountains, is described from diagnostic morphology and DNA barcodes. Male adult and genitalia are illustrated, whereas the female sex remains unknown. The species inhabits alpine scree with patchy herbaceous plants and is considered as possible endemic species of the Altai Mountains. An updated checklist of the 13 global Eidophasia Stephens, 1842 species is provided. The likely polyphyly of the genus is discussed from molecular data of the barcode region of the mt COI gene.

    Abstract:

    The Holarctic genus Eidophasia Stephens, 1842 belongs to Plutellidae (Kyrki 1984, 1990; Dugdale et al. 1999). The genus currently includes 12 species (Sohn & Baraniak in press) which are heterogeneous in morphologies. In fact, there have been no convincing synapomorphies proposed for Eidophasia. Eidophasia syenitella (Herrich-Schaffer, [1854]) is one of the European congeners. Herrich-Schaffer (1853-1855) associated E. syenitella with E. messingiella (Fisher von Roslerstamm, 1840), based two superficial similarities, i.e. a slim body and the presence of scale tuft on the 2nd segment of the labial palpus. Friese (1966) synonymized E. concinnella Christoph, 1888 and E. zukowskyi Amsel, 1939 under E. syenitella. After examining various local populations of E. syenitella from Europe, we found Friese's synonymy unwarranted. Eidophasia syenitella has been characterized with only its external appearance. There is yet no description of the genitalia available for the species. This gives a challenge in evaluating the taxonomic status of E. syenitella and its two putative synonyms. This issue needs further attention and will be scrutinized in separate papers. Little is known about the biology of E. syenitella. The known larval host records suggest that this species is exclusively associated with a genus of Brassicaceae, Arabis or rockcress. The aim of this paper is to re-describe the species with the genitalia of both sexes for the first time.

    Abstract This catalogue includes a total of 31 species of Yponomeutoidea for which all or a part of type series have been deposited in the collection of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University: 10 Argyresthiidae, eight Lyonetiidae, seven Ypsolophidae, two Yponomeutidae, two Plutellidae, one Heliodinidae, and one whose systematic position remains uncertain. Of these, the primary type specimens of Yponomeutoidea comprise six holotypes, 11 lectotypes, and one species described from syntypes. All primary and secondary type specimens of Yponomeutoidea from the collection are catalogued with annotations of their original citations, collecting data, specimen condition, current taxonomic status, and if necessary, notes on uncertainty involving the type series.     Abstract:

    The genus Stachyotis (Lepidoptera, Yponomeutoidea, Plutellidae) is reviewed by re-description of the type species, Stachyotis epichrysa Meyrick from Sri Lanka and description of a new species, S. chunshengwui sp. nov. from China. These 2 congeners are distinguished from each other in their forewing patterns and male genitalia. The diagnostic features of Stachyotis are proposed from the forewing venation, structures of the second sternite and the tergites, and the male genitalia. A possible association of Stachyotis and Orthenchesgroup is discussed.

    The recent major outbreaks of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), in cruciferous plants in Iran has led to attempts for sustainable pest management strategies, mainly based on the natural enemies. The present study aimed to investigate naturally occurring parasitism of P. xylostella in cabbage and cauliflower fields of central Iran. For this purpose, field studies were performed to identify parasitoids of P. xylostella, and to evaluate percentage parasitism of P. xylostella using the recruitment method in main cabbage-growing areas of Isfahan province in 2009. In present study, seven species of parasitoid wasps (five larval and two pupal parasitoids) and two species of hyperparasitoid wasps were determined. In recent years, diamondback moth has had outbreak in Isfahan province and has caused many damages. The use of usual insecticides in multiple suggested doses was not able to control this pest.     The sublethal effects of pyriproxyfen (PYR, a juvenile hormone analogue) were investigated for two consecutive generations on life-history parameters, such as developmental time, pupal weight, fecundity, fertility and longevity of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). After topical application bioassay of third instar larvae, the LC25 and LC50 values (as sublethal doses) were determined to be 1.49 and 2.01 μg/μl, respectively. The results showed that the egg incubation period, larval and pupal duration times and oviposition period were increased in treated groups compared with the control (treated with distilled water). Pupal weight, adult longevity, fecundity and fertility were significantly reduced in the treatment groups compared with the control.     ABSTRACT The effects of 10 commercial canola, Brassica napus L., cultivars widely grown in Iran—‘SLM046,’ ‘Opera,’ ‘Okapi,’ ‘RGS003,’ ‘Modena,’ ‘Sarigol,’ ‘Zarfam,’ ‘Licord,’ ‘Hayula420,’ and ‘Talaye’—on the demographic parameters of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), were determined. The experiments were conducted in a growth chamber at 25 ± 1°C, 65 ± 2% RH, and aphotoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) h. The comparison of intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm ), net reproductive rate (R0), and the survival rate of adult stage of P. xylostella on 10 canola cultivars suggested that this pest performed best on SLM046. The rm value of P. xylostella ranged between 0.241 on RGS003 and 0.304 on SLM046.     Considering that some bioactive compounds are more soluble in ethanol than in water, we tried to evaluate the bioactivity of the ethanolic extracts of Alibertia edulis, Alibertia intermedia and Alibertia sessilis leaves at concentrations of 1 and 3% on the biological characteristics of parental and F1 generations of Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). Thus, the ethanolic extracts of Alibertia edulis, Alibertia intermedia and Alibertia sessilis were tested on the biological characteristics of P. xylostella in the parental generation and their effects on the F1 generation. In general, the species tested showed significant results on the biological characteristics of P. xylostella . Pupal weight was affected by all plant species. A. edulis extracts reduced egg survival on the parental and F1 generation of P. xylostella while in F1 generation reduced the longevity of females. Larval duration, pupal weight and survival of eggs on parental generation were reduced by A. intermedia extracts. In Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass einige bioaktive Verbindungen in Ethanol besser löslich sind als in Wasser, wurde in der vorliegenden Studie versucht, die Wirksamkeit des ethanolischen Blattextrakts von drei Arten der Gattung Alibertia auf die Fortpflanzung und das Wachstum der Kohlmotte Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) zu analysieren. Untersucht wurde die Wirkung von 1 %- und 3 %-igen Lösungen des ethanolischen Blatterextrakts der Arten Alibertia edulis (Rich.) A. Rich., Alibertia intermedia (Mart.) und Alibertia sessilis (Vell.) K. Schum. auf Parental- und F1-Generationen von P. xylostella . Im Allgemeinen konnten signifikante Einflüsse aller drei getesteten Pflanzenarten auf die biologischen Eigenschaften von P. xylostella festgestellt werden. Das Puppengewicht wurde von allen Pflanzenarten beeinflusst. Unter Anwendung von A.-edulis -Extrakten sank die Lebenserwartung der weiblichen Tiere der F1-Generation und verminderte das Überleben der Eier der Eltern- und F1-Generation von P. xylostella . Die Lebenserwartung der Larven, das Puppengewicht und das Überleben der Eier bei der Elterngeneration wurden durch A.-intermedia- Extrakte verringert.

    Abstract Selecting insect-resistant plant varieties is a key component of integrated management programs of oligophagous pests such as diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), but rigorous research on important life history parameters of P. xylostella in relation to host plant resistance is rare. We evaluated six conventional brassicaceous species, namely, Brassica napus L. ‘Q2’, B. rapa L., B. juncea (L.) Czern., B. carinata L., B. oleracea L., and Sinapis alba L., and two herbicide-tolerant cultivars, namely, B. napus ‘Liberty’ and B. napus ‘Conquest’ for their resistance against P. xylostella.     The diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lep., Plutellidae), is one of the most destructive insect pests of crucifers worldwide. It was the first crop insect reported to be resistant to DDT and now in many crucifer-producing regions it has shown significant resistance to almost every insecticide applied in field including biopesticides such as crystal toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis and spinosyns from Saccharopolyspora spinosa. In certain parts of the world, economical production of crucifers has become almost impossible because of its resistance to insecticides and resulting control failure. A coordinated resistance management program needs to be implemented with the involvement of pesticide industry, local pesticide regulatory authorities, scientists and farmers. The judicious use of chemicals in conjunction with other control measures (e.g. biological control agents, resistant varieties, proper fertilization rates) is the best way to manage DBM and other pests of cruciferous crops. Introduction of glucosinolate-sulphatase inhibitors as plant-incorporated-products or sprayable material may also lead to a novel pest management strategy.

    The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera Plutellidae) is a key pest in cruciferous plants. Ethanol extract of Peganum harmala L. (seed) have shown pronounced effect on larval mortality, larval and pupal weight, oviposition deterrence, percent pupation, egg hatching and adult emergence of the diamondback moth, P. xylostella. A mortality of 66 and 100% was found in the third instar larvae that had fed for two days on the cabbage leaves treated with the ethanol extract at concentrations of 30 and 40 mg/ml, respectively. Significant dose response was observed on larval and pupal weight; pupal and adult emergence rate. Significant differences were also observed on oviposition. Percentage of egg hatching was reduced significantly in 30 and 40 mg/ml but not in 10 and 20 mg/ml concentrations. Obtained results showed that ethanol extract of P. harmala had a good insecticidal activity on P. xylostella.

    Abstract Life table and temperature-dependent development of Diadegma anurum (Thomson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) was studied on diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) reared on cabbage, Brassica oleracea L. variety capitata, and cauliflower, Brassica oleracea L. variety botrytis. The developmental periods of immature stages were recorded at five constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, and 35°C). The population of D. anurum and its host failed to survive at 35°C. Mean total development time of D. anurum was not significantly different on two host plants except at 25°C. The developmental zero (low temperature threshold) was estimated to be 7.0 and 6.9°C, and the thermal constant was 282.3 and 277.7 DD on cabbage and cauliflower, respectively, using the linear model.
