Therefore, this study evaluated lethal and sublethal toxicities of select insecticides used in the melon crop for controlling leafminers on the O. scabriventris parasitoid. The toxicity of the insecticides was assessed by confining adults of the parasitoid on freshly sprayed plastic containers, under laboratory conditions. The evaluated insecticides were abamectin, chlorantraniliprole, cyromazine, spinetoram, spinosad, in addition to the negative control treatment (distilled water). The sublethal effect of the insecticides was studied through the parasitism of leafminer larvae by surviving parasitoids. Among the evaluated insecticides, abamectin, spinetoram and spinosad were the most toxic to O. scabriventris; while chlorantraniliprole and cyromazine demonstrated low toxicity to the parasitoid, albeit causing reduction in its parasitism capacity.

However, there is no information on the influence of trichomes on melon plant leaves on the parasitoids’ actions. Therefore, the aim of this investigation was to relate the influence of columnar trichome density on melon cultivars in the parasitism of L. Sativae larvae by O. scabriventris. The study was conducted in laboratory conditions, in which melon cultivars were infested and the leafminer larvae were subjected to the parasitism. The results demonstrated that trichome density can influence the parasitism of L. Sativae larvae by O. scabriventris. Among the studied materials, Piel de Sapo cultivar showed the highest density of trichomes in the leaves (534 trichomes/cm2) and the lowest parasitism (20%)

Determination of damaged leaf area and physiological responses of melon plants submitted to different infestation levels of Liriomyza Sativae

The aims of this study were to determine the damaged leaf area and assess the physiological responses of melon plants submitted to different levels of infestation per larvae of L. Sativae. The study was carried out in a greenhouse, using plants of melon of the cultivar Iracema (yellow melon). The design utilized was completely randomized, with five treatments {control (no infestation in the leaves) and four infestation levels (1; 10; 20 and 30 larvae per leaf)} and 10 replications (melon plants). Initially we evaluated the physiological aspects: photosynthetic rate (µmol CO2/m2/s), stomatal conductance (mol H2O/m2/s) internal CO2 concentration (µmol CO2/m2) and leaf transpiration (mmol H2O/m2/s). After the measurements of physiological aspects, the evaluated leaves of each plant were cut close to the petiole and scanned individually with a measuring scale on the side, being the determination of the damaged leaf area performed with the aid of software for processing and analysis of images. The averages of damaged leaf area observed were of 1.2; 6.3; 19.6 and 40.8 cm2 for infestations of 1; 10; 20 and 30 larvae/leaf respectively. In relation to the physiological aspects, the rate of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration significantly decreased with the increase of leafminer larvae per leaf. The internal CO2 concentration increased with the increase in the number of larvae per leaf.

Portanto, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito letal de diferentes concentracoes de extrato aquoso de folhas de nim, aplicadas via pulverizacao sobre as folhas e via irrigacao no solo, sobre larvas da mosca minadora L. Sativae em meloeiro. Foram realizados dois bioensaios, sendo o primeiro mediante a aplicacao via pulverizacao direta sobre as larvas nas folhas, e o segundo via aplicacao no solo. Os bioensaios foram conduzidos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, composto por seis tratamentos (cinco concentracoes do extrato aquoso de folhas de nim: 0,0; 2,5; 5,0; 7,5; 10,0 e 12,5 g 100 mL-1 de agua destilada e o tratamento controle: somente agua destilada). Foram realizadas duas avaliacoes: na primeira, contabilizou-se o numero de larvas mortas por planta, enquanto na segunda, registrou-se a mortalidade pupal. Foi verificado aumento da mortalidade larval e pupal da mosca minadora com o incremento na concentracao do extrato aquoso de folhas de nim, independente da forma de aplicacao. O extrato aquoso de folhas de nim e letal para larvas e pupas da mosca minadora L. Sativae, independentemente da forma de aplicacao. A maior concentracao do extrato aquoso de nim estudada (12,5 g 100 mL-1), apesar de nao ocasionar o maximo de controle, proporcionou os maiores percentuais de mortalidade de L. Sativae.

The aim of this study therefore, was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of aqueous neem seed extract (Azadirachta indica) on the leafminer (Liriomyza Sativae). The experiment was carried out in a completely randomised design, comprising seven treatments: control (distilled water), positive control (Vertimec® 1.8 EC insecticide - Abamectin), and five concentrations of aqueous neem seed extract (1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 g 100 mL-1 distilled water), with 10 replications (melon plants). The treatments were applied by spraying with a hand sprayer. Evaluation was divided into two stages for each treatment, larval mortality being recorded in the first and pupal mortality in the second. Increased larval and pupal mortality inL. Sativae was found with increasing concentrations of the aqueous neem seed extract. Concentrations of 15 and 20 g 100 mL-1 of the extract caused 91 and 91.8% larval mortality with 89.7 and 90.6% control efficiency respectively. All the concentrations tested caused significant pupal mortality in the surviving larvae, especially the concentrations of 5, 10, 15 and 20 g 100 mL-1, with 99.4, 100, 100 and 100% mortality respectively.

Journal of Asia-pacific Entomology, 2020Co-Authors: Yaghoub Fathipour, Mostafa Haghani, Ali Asghar Talebi, Abdoolnabi Bagheri, Valiollah BaniameriAbstract:Abstract This study was conducted to address the effect of different constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C) on the functional response of the parasitoid wasps Diglyphus isaea Walker and Hemiptarsenus zilahisebessi Erdos to different densities of Liriomyza Sativae Blanchard (2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 larvae) under laboratory conditions. The results revealed the Type II functional response for both parasitoids at different temperatures. The highest searching efficiency for D. isaea and H. zilahisebessi occurred at 25 °C (0.926 ± 0.211 h−1) and 30 °C (1.012 ± 0.241 h−1), respectively. In addition, the shortest handling time for D. isaea and H. zilahisebessi were observed at 25 °C (0.063 ± 0.008 h) and 30 °C (0.058 ± 0.008 h), respectively. These results demonstrated that H. zilahisebessi is more efficient at higher temperatures than D. isaea. Both parasitoids had higher parasitism performance when temperature increased (4.67 parasitized hosts/day at 15 °C vs 15.87 parasitized hosts/day at 25 °C for D. isaea and 3.89 parasitized hosts/day at 15 °C vs 17.24 parasitized hosts/day at 30 °C for H. zilahisebessi). In addition, a quadratic regression was found between handling time and temperature as well as between number of the parasitized larvae and temperature in D. isaea and H. zilahisebessi at different densities of L. Sativae. This study provided a preliminary information on the parasitic behavior of these parasitoids and that D. isaea and H. zilahisebessi can be used properly beside other non-chemical approaches to manage L. Sativae damage at a temperature range of 25–30 °C, respectively.

The within- greenhouse spatial patterns of larvae were aggregated. The slopes and intercepts of both Iwao’s patchiness regression and Taylor’s power law did not differ between years. A fixed-precision level sampling plan was developed using the parameters of Taylor’s power law generated from total number of larvae in a cucumber leaf at three precision levels ( D) of 0.1, 0.25 and 0.28. The resulting sampling plans were tested with sequential bootstrap simulations (n = 500) using 10 independent data sets for validation. Bootstrap simulation within a wide range of densities demonstrated that actual D' values at desired D= 0.28 averaged < 0.28 in all cases. Even at the lowest density of larvae (0.24 larvae per leaf), the actual mean D' was 0.25 at D= 0.28. This result shows that the sampling plan developed in this study is effective and reliable for estimating the larval densities in cucumber greenhouses.

Temperature-dependent development of Diglyphus isaea (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) on Liriomyza Sativae (Diptera: Agromyzidae) on cucumber
Journal of Pest Science, 2007Co-Authors: Mostafa Haghani, Yaghoub Fathipour, Ali Asghar Talebi, Valiollah BaniameriAbstract:The development of Diglyphus isaea (Walker), a parasitoid of leafminers, was studied under laboratory conditions at seven constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40°C) on Liriomyza Sativae Blanchard reared on cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L.). The total development period (oviposition to adult emergence) decreased with increasing temperature between 15 and 35°C. In 10 and 40°C no development rate was found in D. isaea , so that it may be claimed that these temperatures fall outside the temperature range for development. Linear regression was used to describe the relationship between development rate and temperature. For egg to adult development, males of D. isaea required 153.8 degree-days (DD) above the theoretical threshold of 9.2°C and females required 161.3 DD above 9.4°C. Data were fitted to four nonlinear temperature-dependent models. Evaluation of the models took place based on the following criteria: fit to data, number and biological value of the fitted coefficient, and accuracy on the estimation of the thresholds. It could be concluded that the Briere-1 and Briere-2 models are suitable for estimating the minimum, maximum and optimal temperature thresholds of D. isaea . Thermal requirements and temperature thresholds can be used to predict the occurrence, number of generations and population dynamics of D. isaea .

ONeginO. The total developmental period (oviposition to adult emergence) decreased with increasing temperature, although no development occurred at 10 and 40C. Using the linear model, the estimated lower temperature threshold for the egg, larval, pupal, and entire developmental period was 9.20, 9.75. 11.01, and 10.20C and the effective accumulative temperatures for these stages were 64.10, 81.97, 106.38, and 250 degree-days (DD), respectively. Data also were Þtted to nonlinear temperature-dependent models. Evaluation of the models was based on Þt to data, number and biological value of the Þtted coefÞcient, number of measurable parameters, and accuracy of the estimation of the thresholds. Conclusively, linear and Briere models are recommended as the most efÞcient for the description of temperature-dependent development ofL.Sativae. Temperature-based developmental data can be used to predict occurrence, number of generations, and possibly population dynamics.

Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi conhecer alguns aspectos biológicos dessa praga, criada em plantas de meloeiro, em condições de laboratório a 25°C. As informações obtidas mostram que o ciclo biológico de L. Sativae é de 15,9±0,04 dias (ovo-adulto), sendo: ovo (2,7±0,01 dias), larva (4,1±0,03 dias) e pupa (9,1±0,03 dias). A razão sexual é de 0,51 e as fêmeas vivem mais tempo (19,3±1,09 dias) que os machos (16,2±0,96 dias). Essas informações podem auxiliar na adoção de medidas de manejo integrado de L. Sativae em cultivos de meloeiro e melhorar os sistemas de criação da mosca minadora em laboratório.The leafminer Liriomyza Sativae Blanchard is an important insect pest on melon crops in Brazil. However, the information about its biology on melon (Cucumis melo L.) is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this research was to know some biological aspects of this pest, reared on melon plants, under laboratory conditions at 25°C. Our results showed that the biological cycle of L. Sativae lasts 15.9±0.04 days (egg-adult), namely: egg (2.7±0.01 days), larva (4.1±0.03 days) and pupa (9.1±0.03 days). The sex ratio is 0.51 and the females live (19.3±1.09 days) longer than males (16.2±0.96 days). These results can help in the integrated management of L. Sativae on melon crops and improve the systems for rearing this leafminer in laboratory
