    Abstract:

    In this study two new galls are presented, one in Guapira opposita (Nyctaginaceae) and the other Casearia sylvestris (Salicaceae) for the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia (PNI) Southeast, Brazil. Host plants were found at different points along the Ruy Braga trail. Samples of the morphotypes of each species were photographed in the field and characterized for shape, color, occurrence in plant organs and indumentum. The two morphotypes were induced in the leaf, and the galls on G. opposita were induced by a species of Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) and the galls on C. sylvestris were induced by a species of Liothrips sp. (Thysanoptera). With these new records the number of galls morphotypes in the PNI increases to 489. Assigning the PNI as an area with the highest number of insect galls and host plant species already registered in Atlantic Forest inventories.     Youngomyia matogrossensis Proença & Maia a new species of Cecidomyiidae (Insecta: Diptera) that induces cylindrical hairy galls on leaves of Pouteria torta (Mart.) Radlk. (Sapotaceae) is herein described and illustrated (larvae, pupal exuviae, male and female). The galler, gall and host plant were collected at Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Guimarães, in the state of Mato Grosso (Brazil).     Abstract:

    Representativity of the genus Asphondylia Loew, 1850 (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) in Brazil. This cosmopolitan genus includes 272 galling species described, of which about 100 occur in the Neotropical Region. The present study goal to evaluate the richness of Asphondylia in Brazil, to provide an updated list of the host plant species, to determine the plant organs where galls are induced, to update the geographic distribution of the genus, to verify it distribution in the Brazilian biomes, and to the list the associated fauna. The survey data was carried out by consulting the Cecidomyiidae collection of the Museu Nacional/UFRJ, the database “Web of Science” using Asphondylia and Brasil/Brazil as keywords, 51 Brazilian inventories and two catalogues. Asphondylia is represented by 58 species in Brazil, among them, twenty are already known and 38 are still undetermined. The Brazilian described species represent 8% of the total of known species of Asphondylia in the world and 21% of species of the Neotropical fauna. This genus is associated with 51 plant species and 20 plant families in Brazil. Asteraceae comprise the greatest richness of Asphondylia species. This genus was found in five biomes, among them the Atlantic forest has the highest species richness. The associated fauna comprises parasitoids (Hymenoptera) and inquilines (Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and Diptera).

    Clinodiplosis cecropiae Proença & Maia a new species of Cecidomyiidae (Insecta: Diptera) is described and illustrated herein (larva, pupal exuviae, male and female). Samples of gall and host plant were collected in Amazon Rainforest areas, in Monte Negro municipality, Rondônia state, Brazil. The galler was obtained by rearing in laboratory. The specimens were mounted on microscope slides. The type material is deposited in the Cecidomyiidae collection of Museu Nacional/Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. The new species induces globoid galls on stems of Cecropia sp. (Urticaceae). This is the first record of a Clinodiplosis species inducing galls on Urticaceae plants

As plantas hospedeiras foram encontradas em pontos diferentes ao longo da trilha Ruy Braga. As amostras dos morfotipos de cada espécie foram fotografados no campo e caracterizados quanto à forma, cor, ocorrência nos órgãos vegetais e indumentária. Os dois morfotipos foram induzidos na folha, sendo que as galhas em G. opposita foram induzidas por uma espécie de Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) e as galhas em C. sylvestris foram induzidas por uma espécie de Liothrips sp. (Thysanoptera). Com os resultados encontrados no presente estudo o número de morfotipos eleva-se para 489 no PNI, atribuindo ao parque o status de área que possui a maior riqueza de galhas de insetos e o maior número de espécies de plantas hospedeiras já registradas em inventários da Mata Atlântica.Palavras-chave: Cecidomyiidae, Interação inseto-planta, Inseto galhador, Mata Atlântica

    Abstract:

    Lopesia (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) is known from 30 species, 25 Neotropical. All are gall-inducers and monophagous, except Lopesia davillae. Each species induces a peculiar gall on the host plant. Due to this specificity, gall morphotype + host plant identification are used to indicate the galler’ presence.  Most galling-species are known from few localities and the examination of galled exsiccates can add new geographic records. Museu Nacional and Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro herbaria were investigated. 174 exsiccates with galls of seven species of Lopesia were found. Several new records are reported (country:1, states: 17, and municipalities: 35). Keywords: Gall, insect–plant interactions, geographic distribution.Lopesia (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) é um gênero conhecido por 30 espécies, 25 delas Neotropical. Todas são indutoras de galhas e monófagas, exceto Lopesia davillae. Cada espécie induz uma galha peculiar em sua planta hospedeira. Devido a essa especificidade, o morfotipo de galha + a espécie de planta hospedeira são usados para indicar a presença do galhador.  A maioria das espécies indutoras é conhecida de poucas localidades e o exame de exsicatas com galhas pode acrescentar novos registros geográficos. Os herbários do Museu Nacional e do Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro foram vistoriados. Cento e setenta e quatro exsicatas com galhas de sete espécies de Lopesia foram encontradas. Novos registros são assinalados (país:1, estados: 17 e municípios: 35).Palavras-chave: Galha, interação inseto–plantas, distribuição geográfica

    Abstract:

    Galling insects commonly change the chemical profile of their host plant tissues during gall induction and establishment. As a consequence, galls accumulate a wide range of metabolites in specialized cells, which may be organized in a nutritive tissue and in outer storage cells. The nutrients compartmentalized in nutritive cells may be directly assessed or metabolized via enzymatic mediation, while the gall outer cortex may accumulate secondary metabolites. These secondary metabolites may configure a specialized chemical barrier against the attack of natural enemies. Either the nutritive inner cells or the outer cortical cells, with their specific metabolic apparatus, should differentiate under the chemical constraints of each host plant-galling herbivore interaction. This premise is herein addressed by the investigation of the histochemical profile of the non-galled leaves and galls induced by Diptera: Cecidomyiidae on Piper arboreum . The spatial compartmentalization of the nutritive and defensive metabolites indicates the new functions assumed during the redifferentiation of the host plant cells. The enzymatic mediation of the primary metabolites by sucrose synthase and invertases favors the nutritive requirements of the galling Cecidomyiidae or the structural maintenance of the gall. The accumulation of secondary metabolites is restrict to the tissue layers not involved in nutrition, and may act in the chemical protection against predators or parasitoids. Current results systematically document metabolites compartmentalization, evidence the impairment of toxic compounds storage in cells surrounding the larval chamber, as well as, detect the redirection of nutritive substances to the site of the Cecidomyiidae feeding. The activity of sucrose synthase is restrict to the nutritive tissue in the galls on Piper arboreum , and reinforces previous detection of this enzyme mediation in carbohydrate metabolism in Cecidomyiidae galls.

    Abstract The galls induced by Cecidomyiidae, Diptera, are very diverse, with conspicuous evidence of tissue manipulation by the galling herbivores. Bud galls, as those induced by an unidentified Cecidomyiidae species on Marcetia taxifolia , Melastomataceae, can be considered as one of the most complex type of prosoplasma galls. The gall-inducer manipulate the axillary meristem of the plant in a way that gall morphogenesis may present both vegetative and reproductive features of the host plant. Herein, we analyzed traces of determinate and indeterminate growth in the bud gall of M. taxifolia , looking for parallels between the features of the leaves and flowers, natural fates of the meristematic cells. The bud galls are induced by the cecidomyiid fly, and are formed by the connation of eight leaf primordia, a common process in ovary morphogenesis. The bud gall corresponds to a pistil-shaped gall morphotype, with anatomical features similar to those of an hypanthium and sepals. The gall mimics an ovary, which has protective barriers at the apex, and a nutritive tissue (with storage of lipids and proteins) or a placenta, respectively, at the basal portion. The redifferentiation of the promeristem into a nutritive tissue at the base of the gall confers a determinate destiny to the axillary bud. Comparatively, the gradients of cell expansion and of accumulation of primary metabolites also indicate that the gall and the ovary are convergent structures. Some constraints of the host plant cells, such as the absence of lignification, and the accumulation of polyphenols, lipids and terpenoids, are not altered and may confer chemical protection for plant tissues and the larva against oxidative stress.

    Abstract:

    Previous ultrastructural and histochemical analysis proposed patterns in the accumulation of substances in galls of Diptera: Cecidomyiidae in some plant species of the temperate region. Similar analyses were done to verify the conservativeness of these patterns in the Neotropical region, where a great number of species of Cecidomyiidae is responsible for a wide diversity of morphotypes. Two gall morphotypes induced by Cecidomyiidae in a unique host plant, Copaifera langsdorffii, were studied. The gradients of carbohydrates and the activity of invertases and acid phosphatases were similar, but the cytological gradients and distribution of proteins evidenced that the sites of the induction as well as the amount of neoformed tissues may be peculiar to each gall system. The production of lipids just in the secretory cavities either in the non-galled or galled tissues indicated a potentiality of the host plant which could not be manipulated by the galling insects. Further, the absence of nucleus in the nutritive tissue, an exclusive feature of the horn-shaped galls, indicates cell death attributed to the feeding habit of the galling herbivore.

    Abstract:

    Cecidomyiidae galls commonly present a zonation of tissues with lignified cell layers externally limiting a reserve tissue and internally limiting a specialized nutritive tissue next to the larval chamber. The cytological aspects of this specialized tissue indicate high metabolic activity as well as carbohydrate accumulation. In Aspidosperma spruceanum-Cecidomyiidae gall system, ultrastructural and histochemical investigations corroborated this pattern and also revealed the storage of proteins in the nutritive cells. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), callose, and pectin accumulation were related to the feeding activity of the galling herbivore. Phosphorylase, glucose-6-phosphatase, acid phosphatases, invertases, and sucrose synthase activities were detected for the first time, in the Neotropical region, and discussed in relation to gall maintenance and the feeding activity of the Cecidomyiidae.

    Morphological alterations detected in several plant species due to gall induction are commonly followed by chemical changes fundamental to the establishment and maintenance of the host plant-gall maker system. The study of phenolic contents variation and its relation to gall development in Aspidosperma spruceanum-Cecidomyiidae system through a year-time detected two insect life cycles. The level of infestation was high, getting up to 87%, and the Cecidomyiidae preferentially oviposited in internervural region. Seasonal variation in phenolic contents in healthy and galled leaves detected in A. spruceanum was primarily related to abiotic conditions. Even though the levels of phenolic contents might get a maximum of 10 mg EAT g-1, which indicated a non stimulating cell chemical environment to gall induction and herbivore survivorship, A. spruceanum gall maker surpassed this chemical barrier, and might also be favored by the chemical protection against its natural enemies, that phenolic contents might confer.

    Background A gall midge species (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) inducing leaf bud galls on Magnolia kobus DC. var. borealis Sarg. (Magnoliaceae) was found in Hokkaido and northern Honshu, Japan. New information Based on its morphology, the species is regarded as an undescribed species of the genus Pseudasphondylia Monzen (Cecidomyiinae, Cecidomyiidi, Asphondyliini). The species is herein described as Pseudasphondylia saohimea Matsuda, Elsayed and Tokuda sp. n. The new species is easily distinguishable from its congeners by the number of adult palpal segments and the shape of the male terminalia and larval spatula.

    Abstract:

    Chinese tallow tree Triadica sebifera (L.) Small (Euphorbiaceae) was originally introduced from China to the United States for the production of candles and soaps in the late eighteenth century, but it became invasive in southern USA. Although traditional herbicidal and mechanical approaches for controlling tallow may provide temporary relief from invasion, these methods have been unable to prevent its spread. Biological control of tallow represents a potentially safe management option that can integrate with other control techniques. Through our search of tallow-specific natural enemies from its native range in China, we found several gall-inducing insects. One of these species is an undescribed gall midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) and may be a promising biological control agent by inducing flower bud galls on young, vigorously growing branches. Gall aggregations were often found on the same tree or group of trees. In the present study, this gall midge is described as Schizomyia triadicae Elsayed & Tokuda sp. nov. (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae).

    Two new species of Schizomyia Kieffer (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae: Asphondyliini: Schizomyiina) are reported from Japan. Schizomyia broussonetiae Elsayed Tokuda n. sp. forms hairy globular leaf galls on the paper mulberry Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) Vent. (Moraceae) and S. uechiae Elsayed and Tokuda n. sp. induces red flower bud galls on the porcelain berry Ampelopsis glandulosa var. brevipedunculata (Maxim.) Momiy. (Vitaceae). Morphological features of larvae, pupae and adults of the new species are described, illustrated and compared in detail to several other Schizomyia species. An updated taxonomic key to known Japanese species of Schizomyia is provided.

    A gall midge that induces conical leaf galls on wild Vitis Linnaeus (Vitaceae) species in Japan was previously identified based on the gall shape as the Nearctic Schizomyia viticola (Osten Sacken) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae: Cecidomyiinae: Asphondyliini: Schizomyiina). In 2016, leaf galls were newly found on cultivated Vitis coignetiae Pulliat ex Planchon cultivar Suzumi-murasaki and the wild V. coignetiae, Vitis flexuosa Thunberg, and Vitis ficifolia Bunge in northern Japan. Morphological studies of the larvae and adults obtained from the galls revealed that they were an undescribed taxon distinct from the Nearctic species and did not belong to any known genera of Schizomyiina. A new genus, Ampelomyia Elsayed and Tokuda, is erected for Ampelomyia conicocoricis Elsayed and Tokuda new species. The new genus can be distinguished from other genera of Schizomyiina by having ventroapical extension on tarsomere I, the larval abdominal segment VIII with a posterodorsal lobe, and dorsally shifted pair of larval pleural papillae. Molecular phylogenetic analysis supports this taxonomic treatment. In addition, we also place three Vitis-associated Nearctic species in the new genus: Ampelomyia viticola (Osten Sacken) new combination, A. vitiscoryloides (Packard) new combination, and A. vitispomum (Osten Sacken) new combination.
